This book examines in depth the degree of compatibility and incompatibility between the general principles and jurisdiction of Islamic law and international criminal law (the Rome Statute). It discusses the controversy related to the non-ratification of the Rome Statute by some Islamic and Arab countries. The author analyses arguments that maintain that Islamic law cannot be compatible with international criminal law, and makes it clear that there are no fundamental differences between the principles of Islamic law and the principles of international criminal law. It uses both literary and archaeological evidence, but attaches a great importance to the epigraphic source. The first section studies the structure of the community, in comparison with patterns attested both in Diaspora and in Eretz-Israel. The second section examines the historical development of the Jewish presence in Rome, and the third section deals with the structure of the catacombs and studies some interpretative problems presented by inscriptions. Through this material the book tries to find the links between this community and Mediterranean Judaism.

In Rome, Global Dreams, and the International Origins of an Empire, Sarah Davies explores how the Roman Republic evolved, in ideological terms, into an "Empire without end." This work stands out within Roman imperialism studies by placing a distinct emphasis on the role of international-level norms and concepts in shaping Roman imperium. Using a combination of literary, epigraphic, and numismatic evidence, Davies highlights three major factors in this process. First is the development, in the third and second centuries BCE, of a self-aware international community with a cosmopolitan vision of a single, universalizing world-system. Second is the misalignment of Rome's polity and concomitant diplomatic practices with those of its Hellenistic contemporaries. Civic patronage in the Roman Empire /

The Roman Empire may be properly described as a consortium of cities (and not as set of proto national states). From the late Republic and into the Principate, the Roman elite managed the empire through insititutional and personal ties to the communities of the Empire. Especially in the Latin West the emperors encouraged the adoption of the Latin language and urban amenities, and were generous in the award of citizenship. This process, and 'Romanization' is a reasonable label, was facilitated by civic patronage. The literary evidence provides a basis for understanding this transformation from subject to citizen and for constructing a higher allegiance to the idea of Rome. We gain a more complete understanding of the process by considering the legal and monumental/epigraphical evidence that guided and encouraged such benefaction and exchange. This book uses all three forms of evidence to provide a deeper understanding of how patrocinium publicum served as a formal vehicle for securing the goodwill of the citizens and subjects of Rome.
