Das Werk präsentiert in zwei Bänden das erste umfassende Gesamtkonzept der Verwaltungs- und Gesellschaftsstruktur des Sasanidenreiches (5.-7. Jh.). In zeitgenössischen Lederdokumenten, Siegeln, Ostraka, Inschriften und Texten, die hier erstmals zusammengeführt werden, berichten die Untertanen des Königs der Könige in Wort und Bild über ihr Leben in den verschiedenen Provinzen des Reiches, über die Organisation der militärischen, zivilen und religiösen Verwaltung sowie über die Kreise der Macht am Hof ihres Herrschers. Zugleich bietet dieses Werk den ersten systematischen Strukturvergleich mit dem Oströmischen Reich, so dass hier die Organisationen von gleich zwei antiken Großreichen mit einer Fülle von unterstützenden Abbildungen, Schemata und Karten behandelt werden. Dabei geht es um nicht weniger als die Beantwortung der Frage, inwieweit Ērānšahr und das Imperium Romanum tatsächlich die "zwei Augen, die die Welt von oben erleuchten" waren, wie der Großkönig Husraw II einst behauptet haben soll (Theophylaktos). The work provides in two volumes the first comprehensive overall concept of the administrative and social structure of the Sasanian Empire (5th-7th century). In contemporary leather documents, seals, ostraca, inscriptions and texts, which are brought together here for the first time, the subjects of the king of kings report in words and pictures on their lives in the various provinces of the empire, on the organisation of the military, civil and religious administration and on the circles of power at the court of their ruler. At the same time, this work offers the first systematic structural comparison with the Eastern Roman Empire, so that the organisations of two ancient empires are treated here with a wealth of supporting illustrations, diagrams and maps. The aim is nothing less than to answer the question of the extent to which Ērānšahr and the Imperium Romanum really were the "two eyes that illuminate the world from above", as the Great King Husraw II is said to have once claimed (Theophylaktos).

This volume focuses on the theological views of the Imāmī Shī'ite theologian Muḥammad b. 'Alī b. Ibrāhīm b. Abī Jumhūr al-Aḥsā'ī (d. after 906/1501), who combined traditional thought of the Mu'tazilites with the philosophical tradition of Ibn Sīnā (d. 428/1037), with the Illuminationist ( Ishrāqī ) tradition of Shihāb al-Dīn al-Suhrawardī (executed in 587/1191 and his followers, and with the speculative mysticism of Ibn al-'Arabī (d. 638/1204). Ibn Abī Jumhūr moreover attempted to harmonize traditional Shī'ite views which were deeply influenced by the Mu'tazilite traditional with typical Ash'arite notions. The book sets out to investigate thoroughly the impact of the various traditions on the theological views of Ibn Abī Jumhūr. It further investigates the place of this theologian within the development of Shī'ite theological thought. The volume also includes a comprehensive study of Ibn Abī Jumhūr as well as a detailed bibliographical examination of his writings.

: This volume gathers several studies concerning the most characteristic material discovered in the system of storage caves of the site of Ayn Soukhna (following the archeological report published in 2016 in a previous book). We present successively all the inscriptions which were found during the excavation of this sector, by adding complements to those which, because of their historical importance, have already been at least partially published, and by studying all the inscribed objects of various periods brought to light. A specific study was also devoted to the exceptional batch of Old Kingdom flint knives collected in the entrance to the G1 gallery. The analysis of nearly one hundred utilitary stone objects is then proposed here, with the determination of the precise use of all this material. A chapter is also devoted to dry pulleys and tenons discovered near the galleries, which could be rigging elements of the boats that were used on the site. Finally, one study devoted to faunal remains which give an insight into food consumption by pharaonic teams during expeditions. Die Untersuchung des Begriffs kābôd JHWH im Alten Testament weist drei Profile einer biblischen kābôd-Theologie auf. Während die altorientalischen Quellen die Wurzel kbd / kbt jeweils mit der Bedeutung 'Schwere' oder 'ehren' verwenden, entwickelten es die biblischen Autoren in einem längerem Traditionsprozess zu einem Aspekt göttlicher Gegenwart fort. Die Studie zeigt, dass die Priesterschrift, das Buch Jesaja und das Buch Ezechiel unterschiedliche Motive aus unterschiedlichen Quellen, biblischen und nicht-biblischen aufnahmen und auf diese Weise drei literarische Profile des göttlichen kābôd. Die Untersuchung späterer Pentateuch- und Jesajatexte weist auf Wechselwirkungen hin, während die Vorstellungen des Ezechielbuches nicht weiter aufgenommen wurden. The investigation focusses on the meaning and function of the term kābôd JHWH in the Hebrew Bible and presents three profiles of kābôd-Theology. While Ancient Near Eastern sources contain the root kbd / kbt always with the meaning 'heaviness' or 'to hounour', in biblical texts the authors developed the term towards an aspect representing his presence. The study shows that the Priestly sources of the Pentateuch, the Book of Isaiah and the Book of Ezekiel contain different images deriving from various sources - bilibcal and non-biblical - forming three literary profiles of the divine kābôd. The investigation of later Pentateuchal and Isaian texts shows that these texts interact while the profile of the Ezekialian tradition was not incorprated anymore.

This volume deals with the question of the \'deuteronomistic history\' in the Old Testament and attempts to demonstrate that such a uniform history never existed; the books of Deuteronomy - 2 Kings do not contain such a history. The first part of the book shows that there is no homogenous conceptual framework in the deuteronomistic historical books. For example, different concepts of sin and punishment are found. Even the destruction of Judah and Jerusalem does not represent a \'Leitmotiv\' of divine punishment. The second part of the book deals with problems relating to the various deuteronomistic redactions in the historical books of the Old Testament. In this book the author introduces new perspectives in the discussion of a central problem of Old Testament scholarship.

This book examines the modern Arab rediscovery of the Muʿtazila through a critical assessment of the concept of \'Neo-Muʿtazilism\' and by concentrating on the various intentions and contexts of the use of Muʿtazilite ideas. The main part of the book analyzes five ways of understanding Mu'tazilite ideas - liberal, historic-materialist, political-Islamic, literary-exegetical and through comparison with the philosophie des valeurs - as well as one way of dealing with the school historically: the treatment of the miḥna . The book discusses a wide range of authors of whom many, such as Aḥmad Amīn, Ḥusain Murūwa, Ḥasan Ḥanafī, Muḥammad ʿAmāra, Naṣr Abū Zaid und Muḥammad ʿĀbid al-Ğābirī, have had an important impact on modern Arab-Islamic thought. Trade/exchange and cultural contacts are topics which defy single-disciplinary approaches to antiquity. They were combined for the last of the interdisciplinary colloquia in ancient studies (2009) organised by junior researchers from Basel University to enhance interdisciplinary research between the various subject areas. A key objective of the format was to bring together students, junior and senior researchers from various fields of research and to integrate their discussion into a teaching unit on both undergraduate and graduate level. The aim of the conference was not to study the topic of trade/exchange as a medium of cultural contact comprehensively but rather to highlight its potential for interdisciplinary teaching and research. Three key aspects were addressed: theoretical perspectives, specific case studies discussing material traces of trade/exchange in the context of cultural contacts, and the extent to which the subject had already been part of ancient discourse. The volume includes chapters by Celine Wawruschka on theoretical approaches to exchange in archaeology, Rainer Nutz on trade in Middle Kingdom Egypt, Faried Adrom on Late Minoan Crete and Egypt, Rania Kirreh on the Phoenician trading network as witnessed by ceramic sources, Lucja Zieba on slave trade/human trafficking in the Homeric epics, and Beatrice Wyss on trade between the Mediterranean and India as mirrored in Philon's criticism on luxury. A concluding chapter by Melanie Wasmuth (with students' contributions) synthesizes discussions during the colloquium and follow-up sessions.

The spurious texts of Philo of Alexandria : a study of textual transmission and corruption with indexes to the major collections of Greek fragments /

The transmission of Philo of Alexandria's works is very complex, and genuine works are preserved in the original Greek, and in ancient Armenian and Latin translations. There are also many excerpts attributed to him in medieval catenae and florilegia, and in quotations in Church writers. The task undertaken here is to discriminate as far as possible between the genuine and the spurious within the textual history of Philo. An analysis of the sources of the fragments of Philo is followed by a listing of sixty-one texts which are demonstrably spurious, deriving (as is shown here) from various sources, including the Bible, Church writers, classical authors, and Josephus. Also included is a survey of the complete books which have been mistakenly assigned to Philo. An Index locorum provides identifications of the Philonic texts found in all the principal collections of fragments. Many of the identifications of spurious and of genuine fragments are made here for the first time.

This volume is a collection of papers revealing the largely unexplored boundary between linguistic and literary approaches to classical texts. Eleven contributions by various scholars discuss a wide range of linguistic and literary apects of classical texts: the narratee in the prologues of Sophocles' Trachiniae and of Euripides, the chronology in Pindar's Odes, the relation between tense-aspect and Discourse Modes in Thucydides, Xenophon, Vergil and Ovid, the use of aspect in the Law Code of Gortyn, expressions of futurity and the word order of adjectives in Herodotus, and, finally, ancient and modern views on word order. This volume examines the early Church's methods of theological argumentation concerning the metaphorical texts of the Bible. Ps 45 presents some of the oldest biblical evidence for the divinity of Christ and was often cited in christological and trinitarian controversies. In the 4th century the conflict between the traditional interpretation of the Church and linguistic methods erupted. In the course of the debate with Arian exegesis the significance of metaphor and the possibility of speaking of God were conceived anew. This study is based on dogmatic, exegetical and spiritual texts ranging from Justin to Cyril of Alexandria and Theodoret of Cyrus. It shows how the various forms of argumentation interact: how scholarly theology was mediated through preaching, and pastoral and catechetical interests affected christological reflection.

The discovery of the Genizah manuscipt collection is nothing less than a revolution for the knowledge of Hebrew literature and Jewish culture in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. One of the main results of one hundred years of Genizah research is the rediscovery of Hebrew liturgical poetry which shed much light on various aspects of Jewish studies. For the last half century it has been almost comonplace to discover new poems, unknown poets, novel uses of poetry and unfamiliar poetic versions of familiar prose texts within liturgical settings being revealed among the manuscripts and manuscript fragments. The products of the composers and reciters of synagogue poetry convincingly demonstrate the importance of poetry in Jewish worship and communal life. The major corpora of Palestinian liturgical poetry bear evidence to the prolific literary activity of a number of famous poets who laid the foundations for the development of Hebrew poetry in later periods: Yossi ben Yossi, Yannai, Simon bar Megas, Elazar birabbi Kilir and Yohanan ha-Kohen. One of these mostly Byzantine-Jewish 'melodists' was Yehudah who composed a cycle of poems in accordance with the reading tradition of the Pentateuch and Prophets on the sabbath. This study presents Yehudah's oeuvre with commentaries and deals with its historical and literary context in four introductory chapters. The edition is complemented by indices and a bibliography.

The nine contributions in The Trade in Papers Marked with non-Latin Characters initiated by Anne Regourd (edition) approach global history through the paper trade. They cover, in addition to a paper used in 14th C Persia, papers used in Africa (Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tunisia) and Asia (the Ottoman Levant, Mecca, Persia, Russia, and Yemen) during the 19th-20th C. Primarily based on paper examination and quantitative data, the book invites us to treat papers as a source, and provides tools to determine the production of manuscripts in space and time for the area of interest. This methodology offers new insights on the competition between suppliers to the various markets particularly in respect of the emergence of import-export trading companies. This volume deals with the ancient Anatolian textual evidence on dreams. The book starts with a study of the evidence from different perspectives. The second and third parts are of special interest for anthropologists and historians of religion, as they focus on the various shapes and functions allotted to dreams in Hittite Anatolia. The fourth part assembles the Hittite cuneiform texts in which a dream is either described or mentioned. The texts are given in transliteration and translation, with relevant bibliography. This study makes a significant contribution to our understanding of dream conception in the ancient Near East by providing a systematic edition and analysis of the Hittite testimonies.
