Wealth in the Dead Sea scrolls and in the Qumran community /

: This volume is concerned with exploring sectarian attitudes toward wealth and the economic practices that gave rise to and issued from those attitudes. An introductory chapter establishes the state of the question. Three subsequent chapters focus on major sectarian texts: the Damascus Document, the Rule of the Community, and 4QInstruction A. Other sectarian and non-sectarian texts that mention wealth are discussed in a fifth chapter, while archaeological evidence from the Qumran region and contemporary documentary texts are introduced in chapters seven and eight. Finally, ancient secondary testimony on Essene economic practices is discussed. The book breaks new ground in arguing for several biblical rationales for the practice of shared wealth. Its integration of archaeological and documentary evidence sheds surprising new light on the economic organization of the Qumran community.

Collegia centonariorum : the guilds of textile dealers in the Roman West /

: The collegia centonariorum were often seen as the municipal fire-brigades or status groups of sorts in the Roman cities. Through a close investigation of the chronological development and geographical distribution of the collegia centonariorum, their legal privileges, and the prosopographical data of members and patrons, this volume reveals a much more complex picture of their origins, characters and compositions in various regions from the first century BC to the fourth century AD. Intricately connected with the textile economy, the collegia centonariorum illustrate how elements as diverse as material demand from the military and the city of Rome, legal infrastructure, urban development, and organizations of urban-based craftsmen and tradesmen may have interfaced with each other in the Roman world.

Toward the Scientific Defence of Historical Materialism : Basic Elements of the Historical View of Nature, Cognition from the Historical Point of View, The Science of Social Consci...

: Written under conditions of tsarist censorship, Basic Elements of the Historical View of Nature appears to be a dispassionate account of nature, life, the psyche, and society, based on the most up-to-date science, but, in fact, it has a Marxist goal: to defend the idea of historical materialism. After developing a thoroughly materialist, determinist view of reality, Bogdanov explains how forms of social labour determine the forms of human ideology. Cognition from the Historical Point of View explains the causal connections between labour, forms of cognition, and ideological constructs. Finally, The Science of Social Consciousness , written after the relaxation of censorship, presents a history of European ideological development from an explicitly Marxist point of view.

Qumran prayer and religious poetry /

: Qumran Prayer and Religious Poetry represents the first attempt to undertake a systematic, comprehensive study of the liturgical and poetic texts which were discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls from Qumran. The collections of prayers, blessings and hymns indicate that fixed prayers were already customary within Judaism during the period of the Second Temple within sectarian circles. In the light of the prayer texts from Qumran the author conducts a systematic study of Jewish prayer beginning with its biblical traditions, through its development during the Second Temple period, and down to rabbinic prayer. By means of comparative literary analysis, the author is able to elucidate the relationship of the Qumran texts to forms and motifs found in parallel text types from various periods and circles within Judaism. This volume provides the reader with tools for a renewed study of the history of prayer in Judaism in the light of new textual evidence from the Second Temple period.

Discourse cohesion in ancient Greek /

: Central in this volume of the 6th International Colloquium on Ancient Greek Linguistics is the question how cohesion is created in Ancient Greek texts. The contributions to the volume either discuss the various cohesive devices that occur in a specific text or focus on the use and function of a particular cohesion device in a larger corpus. Apart from the use of pronomina and particles, less standard cohesive devices, like the use of tense and the grammatical form of complements, are taken into consideration. The result is a volume that gives a good impression of recent research in the field of Greek linguistics, not only of interest for classical scholars, but also for general linguists interested in discourse coherence cnd cohesion. The Congress of Carlowitz (1698/99) : Supra-cultural Diplomatic Norms and Practices of Peacemaking at the End of the Seventeenth Century /

: This book delivers the first comprehensive analysis of the Peace Congress of Carlowitz (1698/99), challenging traditional Eurocentric views on early modern diplomacy. It demonstrates that peacemaking norms and practices were largely 'supra-cultural'-transcending cultural and religious divides across Europe and the Ottoman Empire. Carlowitz emerges as a significant multi-religious congress that introduced pioneering practices, particularly in ceremonial regulations. By confronting cultural essentialism, provincialising the Westphalian congress-model paradigm, and demythologising Carlowitz as a decisive political turning point-notably marking the adoption of a Western European-style diplomacy by cultural 'outliers' such as the Ottoman Empire and Muscovy-this study offers fresh insights into the complexity and polycentric nature of early modern multilateral diplomacy.

Plato as Author : The Rhetoric of Philosophy /

: This collection, focusing on literary aspects of the Platonic dialogues, includes stimulating and diverse essays by scholars from several different fields. Plato, the critic, satirist, and (perhaps) inventor of "rhetoric" framed his own discourse in complex ways. Republic is a mimetic text that presents a sophisticated analysis of the various types of mimesis; Phaedrus , featuring embedded exemplars of exquisite prose style, includes a severe critique of literary authorship. Texts such as these seem to demand the fullest resources of a sophisticated analysis of discourse. Essay topics include friendship and desire in the Lysis, Socratic irony in Cratylus, mystery imagery in Phaedrus, and the peculiar couch in Book 10 of Republic. Contributors include Michael Erler, David Gallop, Francisco Gonzalez, Charles Kahn, Andrea Nightingale, and Thomas Szlezák.

Salvaging Modernity: A Social Contract for the Age of Permacrisis /

: Modernity is stuck on an unsustainable course, which poses a challenge to both critical theory and praxis. My book develops a comprehensive diagnosis of the times by reviewing the rapidly growing field of critical theories that focus on structural paradoxes and social suffering. To address the complex challenges of the era of permacrisis, various emancipatory praxes are elaborated from the perspective of intersubjective (e.g., mimetic violence), technological (e.g., algorithmic reification), and discursive (e.g., cynical justification) distortions. In order to provide a synthetic framework, a new social contract is proposed, based on responsibility towards the particularistic other instead of universal justice.

The Positivist and the Ontologist : Bergmann, Carnap and Logical Realism /

: The book contains the first systematic study of the ontology and metaphysics of Gustav Bergmann, tracing their development from early (1940s) criticisms of Carnap's semantical theories in Introduction to Semantics, to their culmination in his 1992 New Foundations of Ontology . This involves a detailed study of the implicit metaphysical doctrines in Carnap's important, but long neglected, 1942 book and their connection to his influential views on reference, truth and modality, (including, contrary to current opinion, Carnap's initiating the development of predicate modal logic) that culminated in Meaning and Necessity . In dealing with various fundamental issues in ontology and metaphysics, the book discusses relevant views of major philosophers, such as Russell, Moore, Bradley, Wittgenstein, Meinong, Brentano, Husserl, Broad, McTaggart, and Quine, and of contemporary and recent figures, including D. M. Armstrong, D. Lewis, S. Kripke, J. Searle, W. Sellars, D. Davidson, J. J. C. Smart, and H. Feigl. Building on the critical studies of Bergmann, Carnap and such other philosophers, the author argues for a form of Logical Realism derived from important, but long misunderstood and ignored, aspects of Russell's theories of descriptions, reference and truth.

Two studies in the semantics of the verb in classical Greek /

: The first part of this volume offers an analysis of the use and distribution of the perfect in the classical period of ancient Greek, based on the complete relevant material in Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides (tragic poetry), Aristophanes (comic poetry), Thucydides, Xenophon's Anabasis (historical prose), Lysias (rhetorical prose) and Xenophon's Opuscula (various prose types). The material is made accessible by several indices. In the second part insights gained in the field of discourse analysis are applied to the description of the contrast between aorist and present verb forms. The author has endeavoured to provide an explicit account of the actual functioning of these verb forms in their contexts . Special care has been given to reducing technical jargon in the interest of those who feel themselves classicists rather than professional linguists.

Scribal practices and the social construction of knowledge in antiquity, late antiquity and the Medieval Islam /

: "Scribal practices across disciplines are often explored through divisions between words, stiches and verses, sections, scribal hands and marks, correction and copying procedures. This volume offers a different perspective: writing as shown here is, at its heart, a deeply social practice connecting narrative to the different categories of knowledge (linguistic, political, administrative, legal, historical and geographic) and literacy. The twelve essays investigate how scribal practices are related to the construction of knowledge and challenge the conventional boundaries. They address various types of knowledge whose potential is triggered by certain needs and values in the context of Antiquity, Late Antiquity and Medieval Islam from al-Andalus through Egypt, Syria to Iraq, Anatolia and Bactria as far afield as Ethiopia. The vast majority of the papers are related thematically and the overall connection between the articles is the salient feature of this volume. The papers also demonstrate how the local context has shaped scribal practices allowing for cross-cultural comparison."-- Publisher's website.

Interactions in Interpretation : The Pilgrimage of Meaning through Biblical Texts and Contexts /

: The concept of intertextuality was originally coined as an instrument in answering the question of how meaning is communicated through texts. The Interactions in Interpretation discusses various aspects of how the world of the Bible (seen as a world of a certain language: a complex of ideas, notions, images, idioms, stories, that are shared and referred to) communicates with other worlds in both directions. The collection of studies follows three types of interactions with marked bearing on understanding: (1) interactions with a particular motif of dream, (2) interactions with a particular text of Isa 6:9-10, (3) intertextuality in changing contexts.

Wordplay on Proper Names in Luke-Acts /

: This monograph identifies forty proper names in Luke-Acts whose meanings are significant in their narrative contexts. About half of these names are also used in various types of verbal wordplays. Is the name of the recipient of both of Luke's works, Theophilus "Loved by God," used meaningfully? Is the name of Eutychus "Fortunate," who survives a fall from a third-story window, significant in the context of this story? Does the common appearance of the name Rhoda "Rose" in New Comedy contribute a comical element to her role as an ineffective door keeper? Luke's literary practice in his treatment of names appears to be fundamentally different from that of other New Testament writers. Why is this the case?

The Demotic and Hieratic Papyri in the Suzuki Collection of Tokai University /

: This volume publishes, for the first time, approximately fifty late Egyptian texts from the Suzuki collection held at Tokai University, Japan. The project is a result of a five-year collaboration between Tokai University, Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, The University of Michigan, and the Staatliche Museum zu Berlin. The texts were purchased by Professor Suzuki mainly in the early 1960s from various dealers in Cairo. The bulk of the collection, now housed in the Department of Asian Civilization, School of Letters at Tokai University as part of the Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection (AENET), consists of early demotic texts. There is also one late hieratic text concerned with temple land, and a few small Greek fragments from the Byzantine period. The texts published here present an interesting range of document types, a range of demotic handwriting, and a few surprises. Among the more interesting are a rare word list and a new mythological narrative. : 139 pges : illustrations, 27plates ; 29 cm. : Includes bibliographical references (pages 131-135)and index. : 9781937040628

On the fringe of commentary : metatextuality in ancient Near Eastern and ancient Mediterranean cultures /

: This volume contains the papers of the second meeting of the international scholarly network "The Hermeneutic of Judaism, Christianity and Islam," held in Aix-en-Provence (September 25-27, 2008). Drawing on Gerard Genette's theory of the five different types of "transtextuality" (Palimpsestes, Paris 1982) - intertextuality, paratextuality, metatextuality, hypertextuality, and architextuality - , the volume discusses the practices of metatextuality as diverse as commentaries, hypomnemata, pesharim, targumim, Talmud, allegoresis, glosses, scholia, catenae, questions-and-responses (erotapocriseis), prophetic extracts, hypotheses, homilies, integumenta and involucra, Keys to Dreams, translations, and transliterations in the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern cultures. Presented with an introduction designed to expand and re-contextualize this issue, the eighteen communications discuss common strategies of metatextuality in Greek and Jewish culture as well as its various manifestations in the Septuagint and other Jewish texts, in the literature of the Ancient Near East and Egypt, in the Greco-Roman world, and in the late antique and medieval literature.

Bengal Water Craft : Boat-Building and Fishing Communities /

: This is a unique work on the boat building traditions of Bengal. The boats of West Bengal have been influenced on the one hand by the boats of Bihar and on the other by the traditions of Bangladesh. North Bengal follows the ecology of the sub-Himalayan region and the boats of the region illustrate this well. Thirteen chapters describe the typology of different boats found in West Bengal. From raft and dugout, the survey moves to the rich centre of boat building at Balagarh. From here it moves to cargo carriers such as the bhedi. Boats are linked to ecological regions but massive programmes such as the Damodar Valley Corporation changed the pattern of the waters. The remarkable ingenuity of the boat builders is shown in the new boat types such as the Cho_t Šālti, which were developed in conformity with the changes in river flow. Chapter fourteen outlines fishing activities in the Sundarbans area, linking this to boat typology. From the methodological angle the work follows closely the model evolved by George Hornell. All available historical records have been examined. The author has conducted a meticulous survey of existing ethnological sources which are used to fill in the gaps in our knowledge. A map showing the centres where various types of boats are made in West Bengal has also been included. This book therefore ventures into new ground, linking ecology with historical methodology, and is, above all, a singular tribute to the all round artistry of the Bengal boat builder.
