"Bonaparte's short-lived 1798 campaign in Egypt, new possibilities of travel, and improvements in printing technology in nineteenth-century France and Britain, a new publishing business dedicated to the production of albums and travel accounts picturing Muslim Egypt and Islamic architecture emerged to cater to a growing European fascination. Visualizing Egypt is about these nineteenth-century French and British illustrated publications filled with images brought from travel to Egypt and then published and promulgated to the Western audience. It analyzes the context and process of production of these books, from their conceptualization to the finished product and its afterlife, from marketing to the sales of these books, and from circulation to their reception by the nineteenth-century audience. By following the long, arduous, and often risky publishing journeys of the makers of these books, from publishers to writers, and artists, such as the Frenchman Émile Prisse d'Avennes, Paulina Banas reveals changing market demands, collaborations, conflicting views, and the unsettled authorship of these works prompting us to think more profoundly about the artistic and intellectual exchange in the world of 19th-century Orientalist book production. Visual representations of the Holy Cross are often so ubiquitous in Christian art that they are often overlooked as artistic devices themselves. This volume offers an exploration of the variety of designs and associated imagery by which the Cross was expressed across the Egyptian landscape in late antiquity. A survey of locations and images leads to an analysis of artistic influences, possible symbolism, variance across time and place and the contextual use of the motif. Gillian Spalding-Stracey provides the reader with an art-historical perspective of the socio-cultural situation in Egypt at the time.

This is the first volume ever to systematically study the subject of disabilities in the Roman world. The contributors examine the topic a capite ad calcem , from head to toe. Chapters deal with mental and intellectual disability, alcoholism, visual impairment, speech disorders, hermaphroditism, monstrous births, mobility problems, osteology and visual representations of disparate bodies. The authors fully engage with literary, papyrological, and epigraphical sources, while iconography and osteo-archaeology are taken into account. Also the late ancient evidence is taken into account. Refraining from a radical constructionist standpoint, the contributors acknowledge the possibility of discovering significant differences in the way impairment was culturally viewed or assessed.

The Vase Bally Captives on a Late Predynastic Decorated Stone Vessel: a Study of the 'Bound Prisoner' and Related Motifs in Early Egypt

The Vase Bally, named after its first owner, Swiss businessman Eduard Bally (1847-1926) who acquired it in Luxor in 1904, is one of the most exquisite late Predynastic decorated stone vessels ever discovered in Egypt. First published and discussed by Egyptologist Henri Wild in 1948, the vessel, made of dark-green serpentine and measuring 18.6 cm in height, and its exceptional figural decoration, showing three bound captives in raised relief, deserve a new in-depth study in the light of current research on Predynastic and Early Dynastic art and iconography. This lavishly illustrated book offers a detailed study of this unique object and its decoration, as well as discussions of its possible ritual use, meaning, and sociocultural significance. Moreover, it places its iconography within the early development of the ‘bound prisoner’ and related motifs of interpersonal violence at a time that was crucial for state formation in Egypt. Without doubt, the visual expression of domination and violence against real or potential opponents was a fundamental aspect of the self-image and representation of the ruling elite in those times. Exhaustive catalogues of related objects and representations, including some lesser known or even hitherto unpublished artefacts, as well as famous objects of ‘art’ such as the Narmer Macehead and Palette, are an integral part of the study.
