Post-Systematic Theology II : The Trinitarian Adventure of Love - Ecological Ways of Creation, Humaning and its Displacement /

: This second volume of the comprehensive and conceptual proposal of a Post-Systematic Theology - based on a phenomenological, narrative ontology - treats the trinitarian adventure of love, from the doctrine of God up to the doctrine of sin. In the doctrine of God, the distinctions of divine revealed personality, narrative divine unity, and the divine attributes are discussed. The ecological ways of creation deal with classical themes of creation as the image of the Trinity, cosmology, real possibilities, angels and aliens as well as biological evolution. Humans are presented as relational processes of becoming (humaning) in ontic solidarity to the created mesh. The chapter on hamartiology understands human sin as a misplaced becoming in this mesh. The volume concludes with a proposal for an ethos of creatureliness. Interdisciplinary considerations between theology, philosophy, and the natural sciences play a major role throughout the work.

The Didache : its Jewish sources and its place in early Judaism and Christianity /

: This volume demonstrates that we should understand nascent Christianity and early Judaism as sharing to a large extent the same traditions. It throws fresh light on the Jewishness of the Two Ways teaching in Didache 1-6 as it presents a cautious reconstruction of the Jewish prototype of the Two Ways and traces the Jewish life situation in which the instruction could flourish. In the field of liturgical studies, a significant contribution is made to the discussion of Didache 7-10. It improves our understanding of the Jewish provenance and historical development of Baptism and Eucharist. The book also presents an intriguing look into the ministry of itinerant apostles and prophets (Didache 11-15) considering the larger environment of Jewish religious and cultural history.

The sublime and its teleology : Kant, German idealism, phenomenology /

: What are we talking about when we qualify something as sublime? Is it just a qualification of the beautiful in its most touching degree? Is it a qualification of something ouside there anyway? Is it a feeling or a reflecting judgment on aesthetic appreciation? And can we reduce the sublime to the aesthetic? The authors of this book all take the analysis of Kant in \'Critique of the Power of Judgment\' as their primary reference. The argument of this book however is to show in what way the Kantian legacy on this topic is still a main stream of inspiration for contemporary thinking, whether in line with Kant or overcoming his primary impetus for modern philosophy of freedom in a critical reception.

Philosophy as a Way of Life: New Research Directions /

: This book brings together contributions from leading scholars around the world on philosophy as a way of life (PWL), the research field opened up by the groundbreaking works of Pierre and Ilsetraut Hadot. The chapters examine how PWL opens up new perspectives on historical thinkers like Augustine, Alberti, and Mary Astell (part 1), examine the scope and dimensions of this growing research field, including in its comparative dimensions (part 2), and reflect upon PWL as a metaphilosophical paradigm (part 3). The collection as a whole, which closes with contributors reflecting on targeted questions, aims to chart the next research directions for PWL, 30 years after Pierre Hadot's classic study was translated into English.

The Artistic Object and Its Worlds : Literature and Cinema /

: "The best way of being an artist is not to serve a particular art." The film critic André Bazin believed artists create without boundaries in mind. Literary criticism should be no different. This book is a unique collection that critically reflects on the complex, non-unidirectional, and organic relationship between cinema, literature, photography, and the other arts. With essays by David Damrosch, Laura Marcus, Ignacio Sánchez Prado, Maria Dabija, and Michael Makarovsky among others, this volume establishes a much needed dialogue between the fields of world literature and world cinema.

Orthodoxy, liberalism, and adaptation : essays on ways of worldmaking in times of change from biblical, historical, and systematic perspectives /

: How does religion cope with changing situations? Are orthodoxy and liberalism really competing strategies? The essays in this volume argue three views. (1)Orthodoxy is not to be seen as the real and original form of a given religion, but as an idealized original form that should be construed as a construction in reaction to changes in time. (2) Over the ages, liberalism - despite its laudable strive for adaptation - has been less successful than generally assumed. This lesson from history can be quite important in view of the adaptation processes for Muslims in Western Europe. (3) Of great importance for the survival of religion seems to be a clear definition of the boundaries of religiously informed practices and ethics. Their recognisability and authenticity shall - when combined with a due lack of obtrusion - be of great influence for the ongoing acceptance of religion(s) in the public domain.

Ancient Judaism in its Hellenistic Context /

: This volume explores the ways in which Jews lived within the Hellenistic and Greco-Roman contexts, how they negotiated their religious and social boundaries in their own distinctive manner. Scholars demonstrate how the Jewish encounter with Hellenism led not to a conscious struggle with alien forces but rather in many instances to an active re-tailoring and re-shaping of tradition in light of their material, ideological and philosophical surroundings. That is to say, the Jews, a minority people, maintained their identity by adapting the trappings, to varying degrees, of their milieu. These essays also reflect many issues that emerge when we study the development of several aspects of Jewish Civilization through the ages in light of broad socio-political, cultural and philosophical contexts.

Śrīvijaya Kavirājamārgaṃ : The Way of the King of Poets /

: The Kavirājamārgaṃ (The Way of the King of Poets), the first extant work of early Kannada, was composed in the ninth century by poet-scholar Śrīvijaya in the court of King Nrpatunga of Mānyakhēta. The Kavirājamārgaṃ magnificently defines and illustrates poetic ornaments of sound and sense (alank \ āras), elucidates important features of early Kannada grammar and prosody, and offers us a glimpse into the early history, geography, and aesthetic tastes of the Kannada region and its people. It is therefore, a work of monumental importance for understanding the development of a regional poetic consciousness within the contexts of classical cosmopolitan structures of thought and aesthetic taste.

Reading Luke-Acts in its Mediterranean milieu /

: This volume pulls together thirteen essays written by the author since the late 1970's which give a distinctive, coherent reading of Luke-Acts. Twelve of the essays focus on the theological perspectives of Luke and Acts as they can be discerned from the angle of vision of the \'authorial audience\' as delineated by the non-biblical literary critic, Peter J. Rabinowitz. The final essay focuses on the possible historical value of Acts and the methodology involved in judging that possibility.

Porphyry's On the cave of the nymphs in its intellectual context /

: Neoplatonic allegorical interpretation expounds how literary texts present philosophical ideas in an enigmatic and coded form, offering an alternative path to the divine truths. The Neoplatonist Porphyry's On the Cave of the Nymphs is one of the most significant allegorical interpretation handed down to us from Antiquity. This monograph, exclusively dedicated to the analysis of On the Cave of Nymphs, demonstrates that Porphyry interprets Homer's verse from Odyssey 13.102-112 to convey his philosophical thoughts, particularly on the material world, relationship between soul and body and the salvation of the soul through the doctrines of Plato and Plotinus. The Homeric cave of the nymphs with two gates is a station where the souls descend into genesis and ascend to the intelligible realm. Porphyry associates Odysseus' long wanderings with the journey of the soul and its salvation from the irrational to rational through escape from all toils of the material world.

The notion of that which depends on us in Plotinus and its background /

: The book analyses Plotinus' notion of 'that which depends on us', which although central to his ethics, has never been examined in a specific study before. The book traces the sources of this notion in Aristotle and its reception in Stoicism, Middle Platonism and Early Aristotelian Commentators. It then shows how Plotinus' critical discussion of the inherent problems in previous accounts and his investigation of the notion's application to the Intellect and the One, leads to a highly original interpretation of the notion as central to his account of human agency. The book demonstrates Plotinus' serious engagement with the central issues of ancient ethics, and his original way of tackling them.

The purpose of the Gospel of Mark in its historical and social context /

: This study investigates the issues of the origin and purpose of the Gospel of Mark. The author argues that Mark's Gospel was written in Galilee some time after the Jewish Revolt in 70 AD for a Christian audience that was living under the threat of persecution. The first part of the book examines the situation of Mark's intended readers, and the nature of and reasons for their persecution. The second part establishes in what way the Gospel addresses the situation of Mark's original readers.

Ottoman law of war and peace : the Ottoman Empire and its tribute-payers from the north of the Danube /

: Making use of legal and historical sources, Viorel Panaite analyzes the status of tribute-payers from the north of the Danube with reference to Ottoman law of peace and war. He deals with the impact of Ottoman holy war and the way conquest in Southeast Europe took place; the role of temporary covenants, imperial diplomas and customary norms in outlining the rights and duties of the tributary princes; the power relations between the Ottoman Empire and the tributary-protected principalities of Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania. He also focuses on the legal and political methods applied to extend the pax ottomanica system in the area, rather than on the elements that set these territories apart from the rest of the Ottoman Empire.

Dining with John : communal meals and identity formation in the Fourth Gospel and its historical and cultural context /

: This book explores the accounts of communal meals and the metaphorical use of food and drink language in the narrative world of the Gospel of John. It argues that the Johannine community regularly gathered for communal meals in which the food and drink on the menu would have taken on a spiritual significance far exceeding the physical sustenance. The study employs a socio-rhetorical methodology and consequently moves from text to context. It tentatively describes the texts' influence on the formation of early Christian identity and suggests that the Johannine meal accounts provide a way to imagine the demographic composition of the community and its historical context.

Constantinople through the Ages : The Visible City from Its Foundation to Contemporary Istanbul /

: Constantinople Through the Ages aims to map the long and rich history of Constantinople, from its foundations to the present. Starting point is the 'visible city'; the ways in which continuity and change in history are still observable in present-day Istanbul. The contributors, each of them foremost experts in their fields, address the interaction between the different layers of time from various sources and perspectives. They explore how later inhabitants received and appropriated the legacy of their predecessors, and how the city's tangible and intangible heritage has been perceived and (ab)used in both the past and the present. John Philoponus' new definition of prime matter : aspects of its background in Neoplatonism and the ancient commentary tradition /

: This study provides the first full discussion of Philoponus' excursus on matter in contra Proclum XI. 1-8 which sets out the innovative definition of prime matter as three-dimensional extension. The author argues that Philoponus' definition was motivated primarily by philosophical problems in Neoplatonism. Philoponus employs the explanation of growth, the interpretation of Aristotle's category theory and the notions of formlessness and potentiality to substantiate his definition. To conclude, the book offers an assessment of the significance of Philoponus' innovation. It is demonstrated for the first time that Plotinus' view of matter exerted considerable influence on both Philoponus and Simplicius. Moreover, the structure of Syrianus' and Proclus' metaphysics prepared the way for Philoponus' account of prime matter.
