Why a ''New Testament''? : Covenant as an Impetus for New Scripture in Early Christianity /

: Why would early Christians perceive the need for a 'New Testament'? Unfortunately, most studies on the NT canon concentrate on its development and closing to the neglect of its impetus. Yet NT texts like 1 Tim. 5:18 and 2 Pet. 3:16 reveal that, within the first century, early Christians began receiving recent Christian texts as "Scripture", on par with their Old Testament scriptural collection. What explains this rapid and remarkable development? Levi Baker traces the connection between Scripture and covenant in early Judaism and early Christianity, arguing that the answer lies in early Christianity's conviction that Jesus had inaugurated the new covenant.

Speech-In-Character, Diatribe, and Romans 3 : Who's Speaking When and Why It Matters.

: In Speech-in-Character, Diatribe, and Romans 3:1-9 , Justin King argues that the rhetorical skill of speech-in-character ( prosopopoiia, sermocinatio, conformatio ) offers a methodologically sound foundation for understanding the script of Paul's imaginary dialogue with an interlocutor in Romans 3:1-9. King focuses on speech-in-character's stable criterion that attributed speech should be appropriate to the characterization of the speaker. Here, speech-in-character helps to inform which voice in the dialogue speaks which lines, and the general goals of diatribe help shape how an "appropriate" understanding of the script is best interpreted. King's analyses of speech-in-character, diatribe, and Romans, therefore, make independent contributions while simultaneously working together to advance scholarship on a much debated passage in one of history's most important texts.

Sleep in Renaissance Poland : Bartolomeo Berrecci's Tomb Sculpture and Its Legacy in East Central Europe /

: Focusing on the Italian architect and sculptor Bartolomeo Berrecci, this monograph examines an important subset of his sepulchral works-recumbent statuary-and offers insights into their patronage, reception, and interpretation. Berrecci's exploration of this sculptural type predates its eventual spread beyond Italy, Spain, and Poland. Indeed, he proved so successful that well over 200 statues can still be found in present-day Poland and Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine and Sweden. Although he mainly produced them for Catholic clients, examples of such monuments also exist in Lutheran, Calvinist and Orthodox settings. The volume draws on a vast array of primary sources, visual, textual, and archival, and compares Berrecci's workshop to the Tuscan Quattrocento workshops of Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello, Perugino et al. The volume draws on a vast array of primary sources, including artworks and documents. Comparisons are made with similar compositions emanating from Tuscan Quattrocento workshops, including Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello and Perugino.

A walk through Jubilees : studies in the Book of Jubilees and the world of its creation /

: The first part of this book is an extensive verse-by-verse commentary on the Book of Jubilees. Kugel's stated aim is \'to understand what the text is saying and why it is saying it,\' and in particular to explore the numerous bits of biblical interpretation found in Jubilees and their connection to other exegetical writings of the Second Temple period. Subsequent chapters focus on the possibility that Jubilees had more than one author, as well as on the book's specific relationship to four other Second Temple texts: the Genesis Apocryphon, the Aramaic Levi Document, 4Q225 Pseudo-Jubilees, and the writings of Philo of Alexandria.

Political and cultural representations of Muslims : Islam in the plural /

: Relations between Muslims and non-Muslims have received unprecedented attention since 9/11. In many predominantly non-Muslim countries intense debates have focused on international relations with Muslim-majority states, but dilemmas of national policy and practice in incorporating domestic Muslim minorities have also provoked heated argument. Meanwhile, within predominantly Muslim societies, and within Muslim diasporas, relationships with non-Muslims have posed pressing questions about compatibility, antagonism or adaptation of beliefs, identities and customs. The essays forming this multidisciplinary collection analyse concerns arising from clashing perceptions of Muslims in the political and cultural spheres: the majority of chapters deal with non-Muslim representations of Muslims, but several chapters reverse the perspective by examining Muslims' own understandings of their relationships with non-Muslim societies. Contributors include: Ahmed K. al-Rawi, Ebru Ş. Canan-Sokullu, Tereza Capelos, Gaetan Clavien, Danila Genovese, Matteo Gianni, Signe Kjær Jørgensen, Priyasha Kaul, Chloe Patton, Timothy Peace, Mirjam Shatanawi, Dunya van Troost, and John Turner.

New perspectives on Aristotle's De caelo /

: This volume is the first collection of scholarly articles in any modern language devoted to Aristotle's De caelo . It grew out of series of workshops held at Princeton, Cambridge, and Paris in the late 1990's. Since Aristotle's De caelo had a major influence on cosmological thinking until the time of Galileo and Kepler and helped to shape the way in which Western civilization imagined its natural environment and place at the center of the universe, familiarity with the main doctrines of the De caelo is a prerequisite for an understanding of much of the thought and culture of antiquity and the Middle Ages. This book is also available in paperback.

Plato and myth : studies on the use and status of platonic myths /

: This volume seeks to show how the philosophy of Plato relates to the literary form of his discourse. Myth is one aspect of this relation whose importance for the study of Plato is only now beginning to be recognized. Reflection on this topic is essential not only for understanding Plato's conception of philosophy and its methods, but also for understanding more broadly the relation between philosophy and literature. The twenty chapters of this volume, contributed by scholars of diverse backgrounds and approaches, elucidate the various uses and statuses of Platonic myths in the first place by reflecting on myth per se and in the second place by focusing on a specific myth in the Platonic corpus.

Tradition, transmission, and transformation from Second Temple literature through Judaism and Christianity in late antiquity : proceedings of the Thirteenth International Symposium...

: Many types of tradition and interpretation found in later Jewish and Christian writings trace their origins to the Second Temple period, but their transmission and transformation followed different paths within the two religious communities. For example, while Christians often translated and transmitted discrete Second Temple texts, rabbinic Judaism generally preserved earlier traditions integrated into new literary frameworks. In both cases, ancient traditions were often transformed to serve new purposes but continued to bear witness to their ancient roots. Later compositions may even provide the key to clarifying obscurities in earlier texts. The contributions in this volume explore the dynamics by which earlier texts and traditions were transmitted and transformed in these later bodies of literature and their attendant cultural contexts.

Religions and education in antiquity : studies in honour of Michel Desjardins /

: Religions and Education in Antiquity gathers ten essays on teaching and learning in the contexts of ancient Western religions, including Judaism, early Christianity and Gnostic Christian traditions. Beginning with an overview of religious education in the ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean worlds, editor Alex Damm and the contributors together demonstrate the mutual influence of religion and education on each other; the relevance of educational traditions in addressing (for instance) historical or exegetical issues; and the thoroughgoing importance of education to religious life across time and space in antiquity. Highly useful to scholars of religion, theology, classics and education, this volume affords a state of the art study on pedagogy and learning in ancient religious contexts.

Empsychoi logoi--religious innovations in antiquity : studies in honour of Pieter Willem van der Horst /

: The fact that religions show internal variation and develop over time is not only a problem for believers, but has also long engaged scholars. This is especially true for the religions of the ancient world, where the mere idea of innovation in religious matters evoked notions of revolution and destruction. With the emergence of new religious identities from the first century onwards, we begin to find traces of an entirely new vision of religion. The question was not whether a particular belief was new, but whether it was true and the two were no longer felt to be mutually exclusive. The present volume brings together articles that study this transformation, ranging from broad overviews to detailed case-studies.

Pentecostal power expressions, impact, and faith of Latin American Pentecostalism /

: During the 1980s an explosion of Pentecostalism across Latin America attracted considerable attention among sociologists, political scientists and regional experts, eventually spreading to other academic disciplines. Indeed, ongoing spectacular growth and the social and political impact of the movement have strongly challenged secularization theory. Yet while studies exploring the phenomenon are plentiful, many limit their analysis to a single country, issue or the perspective of a particular discipline. Thus, this edited volume provides readers with a multidisciplinary and continent-wide treatment of the nature and effects of Latin American Pentecostalism (including a theological analysis, notably absent in most studies) by various experts with published work in the field, and as such represents an important contribution to the current literature.

Political communication in the Roman world /

: This volume aims to address the question of political communication in the Roman world. It draws upon social sciences and the current trend for the historical study of political communication. The book tackles three main problems: What constitutes political communication in the Roman world? In what ways could information be transmitted and represented? What mechanisms made political communication successful or unsuccessful? This edited volume covers questions like speech and mechanisms of political communication, political communication at a distance, bottom-up communication, failure of communication and representation of political communication. It will be of help to specialists in the Roman world, but also to students and researchers of political sciences, and specialists of political communication in pre-industrial times.

Mary Magdalene : Iconographic studies from the Middle ages to the Baroque /

: Mary Magdalene, Iconographic Studies from the Middle Ages to the Baroque examines the iconographic inventions in Magdalene imagery and the contextual factors that shaped her representation in visual art from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Unique to other saints in the medieval lexicon, images of Mary Magdalene were altered over time to satisfy the changing needs of her patrons as well as her audience. By shedding light on the relationship between the Magdalene and her patrons, both corporate and private, as well as the religious institutions and regions where her imagery is found, this anthology reveals the flexibility of the Magdalene's character in art and, in essence, the reinvention of her iconography from one generation to the next.

Creation and salvation dialogue on Abraham Kuyper's legacy for contemporary ecotheology /

: This volume explores the legacy of the Dutch theologian and statesman Abraham Kuyper for contemporary Christian ecotheology. A crucial problem in ecotheology is how to do justice to both creation and salvation as acts of God, given the impact of the environmental crisis and the concern for creation (as creatura). Can Kuyper help one in this regard, given his controversial legacy, especially in South Africa? The volume explores Kuyper's notions of revelation, common grace and re-creation on this basis. It is structured as an inter-continental dialogue with a set of essays by Ernst Conradie, responses from Clifford Anderson, Vincent Bacote, Hans Engdahl, Dirk van Keulen, Cornelis van der Kooi, Benjamin Myers, Leslie van Rooi and Günter Thomas, and a rejoinder.

Idealization XIII : modeling in history /

: The book reveals different dimensions of modeling in the historical sciences. Papers collected in the first part (Ontology of the Historical Process) consider different models of historical reality and discuss their status. The second part (Modeling in the Methodology of History) presents various forms of idealization in historiographic research. The papers in the third part (Modeling in the Research Practice) present various models of past reality (e.g. of Poland, Central Europe and the general history of the feudal system) put forward by historians. Other papers consider the status of scientific laws and historical generalizations. The volume will be of interest to those who study analytical philosophy of history, methodology of history and social sciences, social philosophy as well as theory and history of historiography.

Socialism: the 100-Year-Old Misnomer /

: What if everything you thought you knew about socialism was wrong? Socialism: the 100-Year-Old Misnomer invites you to rethink a century of political and cultural myth-making. Dana Neacşu distinguishes real socialism-rooted in democracy and wealth redistribution-from its authoritarian counterfeit: Soviet-style state capitalism. Drawing on political theory, political economy, law, and culture, and using layered textual analysis, Neacşu exposes how language, ideology, and legal systems conspired to mislabel repression as revolution. Featuring rare visuals and sharp close readings, this book equips you to separate fact from fiction and rethink what justice, ownership, and power could truly mean.

The Scriptures of Israel in Jewish and Christian Tradition : Essays in Honour of Maarten J. J. Menken.

: The Scriptures of Israel in Jewish and Christian Tradition is a collection of studies in honour of Professor Maarten J.J. Menken (Tilburg/Utrecht) and illustrates the rich diversity of approaches to biblical interpretation at the beginning of the Common Era. An international team of specialists share their insights on such topics as the availability of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts, Jewish and Christian hermeneutics, notions of authority and inspiration and even a study of inscriptions. Each in its own way demonstrates that the relationship between text and tradition, culture and belief is always complex.

Security and Political Discourse : How Does the Naming of Challenges as a Security Issue Determine Political Practice? /

: Based on a review of conceptual and empirical work on security theory, including Securitization Theory (ST), Riskification Theory (RT), and Just Securitization Theory (JST), the analysis of securitization processes in Polish political discourse and their impact on political practice is presented. Paulina Polko proposes a theoretical and practical approach that allows readers to understand why and how selected challenges (risk and threats) are presented as existential threats become security issues, which leads to the acceptance of the use of extraordinary measures to implement practical solutions to fight or manage this challenges, risks, and threats.
