The most important medium of Seneca's Lebenskunst is language. We first change the meaning of words through philosophical reflection; then we can change ourselves through language. Each chapter in this book takes linguistic or stylistic observations in texts as starting point (e.g. metaphors from the domains of health, finance, and sea-faring). Topics are man's self-definition in time and place and his relation to property, learning, and tradition. Single words and rhetorical patterns guide us in constructing an inner world and to find our own identity. Texts in Latin and in translation document Seneca's importance for modern, Christian Europe.

This study considers the "I am" sayings in the Gospel of John, interpreted in the context of their reception in late antiquity. It takes an intertextual approach, considering both inner-biblical parallels and extra-biblical texts, which have been much neglected in recent Johannine scholarship. A comparative analysis of the "I am" formula is complemented by the consideration of the metaphors of the predicative "I am" words, focussing particularly on the use of "bread", "light" and "vine" and the context of these metaphors in the Gospel of John and elsewhere. This discussion demonstrates that Johannine Christology is profoundly incarnational. *** Gegenstand der vorliegenden Untersuchung sind die Ich-bin-Worte des Johannesevangeliums. Diese werden in ihrem spätantiken Lese- und Rezeptionskontext interpretiert, wobei die Intertextualitätstheorie als methodische Basis dient und auch außerbiblische Schriften zum Vergleich herangezogen werden, die in der Forschung der vergangenen Jahrzehnte kaum berücksichtigt worden sind. Ergänzend zur vergleichenden Untersuchung der Formel "Ich bin..." werden die prädikativen Ich-bin-Worte als Metaphoren näher bestimmt und exemplarisch drei ausgewählte Prädikationen, nämlich "Brot", "Licht" und "Weinstock" in ihrem jeweiligen Kontext analysiert. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die johanneische Christologie primär als Inkarnationchristologie zu verstehen ist.

In zeitgenössischen Lederdokumenten, Siegeln, Ostraka, Inschriften und Texten, die hier erstmals zusammengeführt werden, berichten die Untertanen des Königs der Könige in Wort und Bild über ihr Leben in den verschiedenen Provinzen des Reiches, über die Organisation der militärischen, zivilen und religiösen Verwaltung sowie über die Kreise der Macht am Hof ihres Herrschers. Zugleich bietet dieses Werk den ersten systematischen Strukturvergleich mit dem Oströmischen Reich, so dass hier die Organisationen von gleich zwei antiken Großreichen mit einer Fülle von unterstützenden Abbildungen, Schemata und Karten behandelt werden. Dabei geht es um nicht weniger als die Beantwortung der Frage, inwieweit Ērānšahr und das Imperium Romanum tatsächlich die "zwei Augen, die die Welt von oben erleuchten" waren, wie der Großkönig Husraw II einst behauptet haben soll (Theophylaktos). The work provides in two volumes the first comprehensive overall concept of the administrative and social structure of the Sasanian Empire (5th-7th century). In contemporary leather documents, seals, ostraca, inscriptions and texts, which are brought together here for the first time, the subjects of the king of kings report in words and pictures on their lives in the various provinces of the empire, on the organisation of the military, civil and religious administration and on the circles of power at the court of their ruler. At the same time, this work offers the first systematic structural comparison with the Eastern Roman Empire, so that the organisations of two ancient empires are treated here with a wealth of supporting illustrations, diagrams and maps. The aim is nothing less than to answer the question of the extent to which Ērānšahr and the Imperium Romanum really were the "two eyes that illuminate the world from above", as the Great King Husraw II is said to have once claimed (Theophylaktos).

Concepts of voluntary death and martyrdom versus the ideal of preserving human life are an essential component of the Ethics of the Abrahamite religions throughout their history. The studies collected in this volume focus on concepts of voluntary death and martyrdom in the Hebrew Bible, Second Temple Period Judaism, Early Christianity and its pagan environment, Rabbinic Judaism as well as in Islam. The contributions of scholars of different background present a broad panorama of the varied perspectives of the Abrahamite religions on this phenomenon. The established concepts of martyrdom are challenged as too schematic. Betrachtungen über das Ideal eines freiwilligen Todes für den eigenen Glauben oder eines Martyriums, das in scharfem Gegensatz zum Gebot der Lebensbewahrung steht, ziehen sich durch die Geschichte der abrahamitischen Religionen. Der vorliegende interdisziplinäre Band versammelt Forschungen zu den Vorstellungen eines religiös begründeten freiwilligen Todes oder Martyriums in der Hebräischen Bibel, im Judentum des Zweiten Tempels, im Frühchristentum und seiner paganen Umwelt, im rabbinischen Judentum und im Islam. Die Beiträge verdeutlichen die unterschiedlichen Perspektiven der abrahamitischen Religionen auf dieses Phänomen. Es zeigt sich, dass die übergreifende, verallgemeinernde Charakterisierung jedes religiös bedingten freiwilligen Sterbens als 'Martyrium' der Komplexität des Phänomens nicht gerecht wird.

Each of the two reconstructed "oldest texts" of the intertestamental work, Joseph and Aseneth , presents a consistent picture with a coherent theology, but there are considerable differences between them. The image of women in each case serves to crystallise these differences, and their analysis opens a window not only on the texts but also on their social contexts. The author develops a method which allows close study of ancient literary images of women and of their effects on ancient readers. It is shown that the different images portrayed in the two versions correspond to differing trends in the pagan and Jewish environment and in Jewish-Hellenistic interpretations of the Bible. A controversy of social and theological importance emerges.

Der Titel Philosophisches Denken, Einübungen zielt nicht auf eine Philosophie, die gegeben ist wie irgend ein Ding, dessen Gebrauch man erlernen kann. Wir entwerfen vielmehr Philosophie, deren Achse die gestaltbildende Seinsnatur des menschlichen Geistes ist. Wäre das morphopoietische Sein des Menschen nicht von Grund auf bildnerisch, so vermöchte der Mensch sie nicht als Philosoph künstlerisch zu erproben, indem er eine Welt in Philosophie und Kunst bildet. Hat der Mensch sich aber so als Welt zu begreifen und zu tätigen gelernt, dann ist dies keine Leistung einer zufälligen Beliebigkeit, sondern die Notwendigkeit des endlichen Geistes, die ihren währenden Ausdruck darin findet, daß der Mensch nach Ursprung und Grund seines möglichen Seins fragt, bewegt von dem Verlangen, begründet und gegründet wissen zu wollen. Dieses Wissen wird als Sprache vernehmbar, die der Mensch durch seine dialogische Weltnatur verlautbart. Es war eine überepochale Einsicht des Philosophen Platon, als er den Menschen als Philosophen begriff, der immer schon wissen will, warum er überhaupt wissen kann. Darum ist es die Wesensaufgabe des Menschen unter raumzeitlichen Bedingungen, den Ursprung seines Seins allererst in sich selbst einholen zu müssen. Der Mensch ist eh und je, wenn auch zunächst verschleiert, dennoch aus der noch ruhenden Kraft seines Geistes Philosoph, ein Philosoph auf dem Sprung zur Tat morphopoietischen Handelns in Philosophie und Kunst. Dies deutlich zu machen, ist der Sinn dieser philosophischen Einübungen.

Es folgen Abhandlungen über Jesu Ruf in die \'Nachfolge\' und seine ethischen Weisungen (Liebesgebot, Verbot der Ehescheidung). Die Leidengeschichte Jesu ist Gegenstand weiterer Untersuchungen. Dabei steht sowohl die historische Rückfrage als auch die Theologie der Passiongeschichte im Zentrum des Fragens. Die vier letzten Studien befassen sich mit explizit christologischen Themen: Davidsohn-Frage, Präexistenz-Christologie, und Neuschöpfung in Christus. Insgesamt liegt somit ein Werk vor, das aktuelle Aspekte der Jesus-Forschung erörtert und zugleich die Anfänge der Christologie ins Blickfeld rückt.
