Speech and thought in Latin war narratives : words of warriors /

: In Speech and Thought in Latin War Narratives , Suzanne Adema offers linguistic and narratological tools to analyse and interpret narratorial choices in speech and thought representation in Latin narratives. Her approach combines insights from (cognitive) linguistic and narratological theories and has been tested and adjusted through corpus based research (Caesar, Vergil, Sallust). The approach is a useful tool to unveil rhetorical uses of speech and thought representation in Latin war narrative by means of close readings of Caesar's Bellum Gallicum 1 and 7, and Vergil's Aeneid 11 and 12. Focusing on the attitudes of the narrators towards war, Adema provides new insights into these texts and offers linguistic and narratological contributions to literary and historical discussions about the Bellum Gallicum and the Aeneid .

The reception of the legend of Hero and Leander /

: This book is a study of the literary reception of the originally Greek love-story of Hero and Leander, examining the nature of the tale and demonstrating its longevity and huge popularity from classical times to the present, in a great variety of different genres. Chapters consider the classical versions (Ovid, Musaios, Martial), medieval and renaissance versions in various European languages, folk and literary ballads (and even a pop song), the lyric, dramatic versions, settings to music, burlesques and travesties in all genres, modern reflections of the story in (experimental) literary forms.

After the past : essays in ancient history in honour of H.W. Pleket /

: What was funny about ancient jokes, and why? Why did the Roman state legislate to curb the behaviour of its obscenely rich and powerful elite, if it never really expected such laws to be obeyed? Why did it oppress the poor, and lavish public child support on them? These are important questions, but ancient Greeks and Romans could never have thought of them. They never questioned the right of the rich to be rich. They could not improve their understanding of Homeric gift-giving with the experience of ritualized friendship among the Trobriand islanders. Such questions and such answers can only come from those who live after the ancient past. This volume honours the well-known Dutch epigraphist and ancient historian H.W. Pleket. Ten substantial essays reflect his wide range, from early Greece to the Roman Empire, and his taste for comparative economic and social history.

A History of Roman Literature (2 vols.) : From Livius Andronicus to Boethius with special regard to its influence on world literature /

: Michael von Albrecht's A History of Roman Literature, originally published in German, can rightly be seen as the long awaited counterpart to Albin Lesky's Geschichte der Griechischen Literatur. In what will probably be the last survey made by a single scholar the whole of Latin literature from Livius Andronicus up to Boethius comes to the fore. 'Literature' is taken here in its broad, antique sense, and therefore also includes e.g. rhetoric, philosophy and history. Special attention has been given to the influence of Latin literature on subsequent centuries down to our own days. Extensive indices give access to this monument of learning. The introductions in Von Albrecht's texts, together with the large bibliographies make further study both more fruitful and easy.

Honores inauditi offers the first comprehensive study of honorary statues and their spatial and social context in Sicily. Based on a catalogue of mostly unpublished material, the book traces honorary statues throughout their historical development, starting from the first archaeologically known honorary statues erected for kings in the mid-3rd c. BC until the practice's decline in Late antiquity. Although continuously used, various changes are detected throughout time: the monuments' material and size, their display, the language of the inscriptions and the actors involved. These changes are contextualized by overarching developments such as trade routes, as well as local urban factors.

Protagoras claims to be able to educate the young. If «Man is Measure of Everything», anybody can make everybody 'better'... To Plato, this doesn't add up. Insofar as pedagogy aims at making humans become better beings, to Plato it supposes a sound conception of 'being' per se. This study explores the ontological implications of homo mensura , Protagoras' premiss, in the 'Theaetetus' - a dialogue which is rarely read ontologically. If the Protagorean premiss doesn't support the pedagogical claim, the 'Protagoras' might not even be about the educational questions under discussion, but turn out to contain a 'hidden' discourse....

Brill's companion to military defeat in ancient Mediterranean society /

: In Brill's Companion to Military Defeat in Ancient Mediterranean Society , Jessica H. Clark and Brian Turner lead a re-examination of how Near Eastern, Greek, and Roman societies addressed - or failed to address - their military defeats and casualties of war. Original case studies illuminate not only how political and military leaders managed the political and strategic consequences of military defeats, but also the challenges facing defeated soldiers, citizens, and other classes, who were left to negotiate the meaning of defeat for themselves and their societies. By focusing on the connections between war and society, history and memory, the chapters collected in this volume contribute to our understanding of the ubiquity and significance of war losses in the ancient world.

Brill's companion to the reception of classics in international modernism and the avant-garde /

: Brill's Companion to the Reception of Classics in International Modernism and the Avant-Garde examines how the writers and artists who lived from roughly the last quarter of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth sought to build a new world from the ashes of one marked by two world wars, global economic depression, the rise of nationalism, and the collapse of empires. By surveying the modernist appropriation of Ancient Greece and Rome, the fourteen chapters in this volume demonstrate how the Classics, as foundational texts of the old order, were nevertheless adapted to suit the stylistic innovation and formal experimentation that characterized modernist and avant-garde literature and art.

Grammatical Observations on Euripides' Bacchae /

: Rijksbaron, A. Grammatical Observations on Euripides' Bacchae. 1990 'No other play of Euripides has been so much discussed as the Bacchae; very few have been the subject of such exact and careful study on the linguistic side'. Thus opens the preface to the first edition of Dodds' commentary. One might subscribe to these words nowadays even more readily than at their original date of publication (1944), if only because Dodds himself has added considerably to our understanding of the play. Nevertheless, as Dr Rijksbaron argues in this commentary-like book, the linguistic side may be due for a reappraisal. This reappraisal does not so much consist in applying the latest insights of general and Greek linguistics, but rather in making use of the impressive grammatical apparatus which is at the disposal of classical philologists, but whose value is not always fully acknowledged, as the commentaries on the Bacchae show. Narrators, narratees, and narratives in ancient Greek literature /

: This is the first in a series of volumes which together will provide an entirely new history of ancient Greek (narrative) literature. Its organization is formal rather than biographical. It traces the history of central narrative devices, such as the narrator and his narratees, time, focalization, characterization, description, speech, and plot. It offers not only analyses of the handling of such a device by individual authors, but also a larger historical perspective on the manner in which it changes over time and is put to different uses by different authors in different genres. The first volume lays the foundation for all volumes to come, discussing the definition and boundaries of narrative, and the roles of its producer, the narrator, and recipient, the narratees.

Collegia centonariorum : the guilds of textile dealers in the Roman West /

: The collegia centonariorum were often seen as the municipal fire-brigades or status groups of sorts in the Roman cities. Through a close investigation of the chronological development and geographical distribution of the collegia centonariorum, their legal privileges, and the prosopographical data of members and patrons, this volume reveals a much more complex picture of their origins, characters and compositions in various regions from the first century BC to the fourth century AD. Intricately connected with the textile economy, the collegia centonariorum illustrate how elements as diverse as material demand from the military and the city of Rome, legal infrastructure, urban development, and organizations of urban-based craftsmen and tradesmen may have interfaced with each other in the Roman world.

Die Lieder des Bakchylides.

: This is the first complete commentary for ninety years on the surviving poems of Bacchylides. Part I, covering the Victory Odes, was published in 1982. Part II, with the Dithyrambs and the fragments of Bacchylides' other books, now completes the work. Like the first part, this volume contains an introduction, the Greek text with facing German prose translation, the commentary, and the indices to Parts I and II. Bacchylides, a contemporary of Pindar, was one of the nine \'classical\' lyric poets whose songs were collected, edited and studied by the scholars of Alexandria. The commentary, in addition to providing linguistic and factual information, aims to highlight the poet's qualities of style and composition which have so far been generally underrated.

Euripidea /

: Euripidea contains material to supplement Volume One of the author's Loeb Euripides. It consists of two parts, Testimonia Vitae et Artis Selecta and Textual Discussions. The Testimonia, ancient notices about the life of Euripides and his career as a tragic poet, are printed together for the first time, together with a facing English translation. The Loeb Introduction examines this material critically. Equipped with this body of evidence, students of Greek tragedy and of ancient biography will be able to assess for themselves the reliability of the biographical tradition, in which, the author argues, too much confidence has been placed by interpreters of the plays. The Textual Discussions explain places in the plays of Volume One, Cyclops, Alcestis and Medea , where the text adopted by the editor calls for comment.

Commentaire sur le Manuel d'Epictète /

: The significance of Simplicius' commentary lies in the fact that it is a Neoplatonist interpretation of a Stoic text. This volume presents the first critical edition based on all the known manuscripts of this work and offers, in contrast to the edition of Schweighäuser (1800) and the recapitulation of this edition by Dübner (1840), a text which is more complete and improved. A long introduction places the work in the philosophical and historical context of its time and characterises it as a spiritual exercise. The edition is preceded by a summary of the history of the text.

Mystery Cults in Visual Representation in Graeco-Roman Antiquity /

: Mystery Cults in Visual Representation in Graeco-Roman Antiquity aims to fill a gap in the study of mystery cults in Graeco-Roman Antiquity by focusing on images for investigating their ritual praxis. Nicole Belayche and Francesco Massa have gathered experts on visual language in order to illuminate cultic rituals renowned for both their "mysteries" and their images. This book tackles three interrelated questions. Focusing on the cult of Dionysus, it analyses whether, and how, images are used to depict mystery cults. The relationship between historiography and images of mystery cults is considered with a focus on the Mithraic and Isiac cults. Finally, turning to the cults of Dionysus and the Mother of the Gods, this work shows how depictions of specific cultic objects succeed in expressing mystery cults.
