Dedicated to the subject of literary rhetoric, this book is divided in three principal parts: I. An historical outline of the relationship of rhetoric and literature. II. An overview of the realm of rhetoric and its parts and functions, above all in the section of \'elocutio\' with its classes of figures, where a critical comparison of traditional and modern models of the rhetorical figures is followed by the design of a new one. III. The implementation of this new concept in seven classes of figures and their respective subdivisions: 1. phonological, 2. morphological, 3. syntactic, 4. semantic, 5. graphemic, 6. textological, and 7. intertextual figures. Each chapter is supplemented by analyses of literary texts conceived as a demonstration of the applicability of the theoretical concepts and structures presented before. An extensive bibliography of research literature and detailed indices of names and subjects conclude this treatise.

During the past three decades Jaap Mansfeld, Professor of Ancient Philosophy in Utrecht, has built up a formidable reputation as a leading scholar in his field. His work has concentrated on the Presocratics, Hellenistic Philosophy, the sources of our knowledge of ancient philosophy (esp. doxography) and the history of scholarship. In honour of his sixtieth birthday, colleagues and friends have contributed a collection of articles which represent the state of the art in the study of the history of ancient philosophy and frequently concentrate on subjects in which the honorand has made important discoveries. An edition of a newly discovered Byzantine treatise of Pindaric metre, this work first discusses its date, place of origin and places it into the context of metrical studies in Byzantine philology. It then examines its relevance for the manuscript transmission of Pindar thereby providing new insights into numerous problems of the textual tradition of this author. Moreover the Pindaric text of the Paleologan era is examined in a systematic fashion with a view to the methods and achievements of individual Byzantine scholars. A concluding chapter discusses the characteristics and the achievements of Byzantine philology in the history of classical scholarship. An appendix provides new descriptions of many Pindaric manuscripts.

In four separate studies, Andreas Heil shows that Seneca, in his tragedies Thyestes , Hercules furens , Troas ( Troades ) and Medea , handles dramatic time less experimentally than has been assumed before. In all of these plays, taking into consideration the accompanying action on the stage and the characters' respective points of view, a gradually developing plot can be reconstructed. Thus, the survey considerably deepens our understanding of Seneca's dramatic technique. In vier Einzelstudien zeigt Andreas Heil, daß Seneca mit der dramatischen Zeit in seinen Tragödien Thyestes , Hercules furens , Troas ( Troades ) und Medea weniger experimentell verfährt, als bislang angenommen wurde. In allen untersuchten Stücken läßt sich - berücksichtigt man die begleitende Bühnenhandlung und die jeweilige Figurenperspektive - eine sukzessive sich entwickelnde Handlung rekonstruieren. Die Untersuchung leistet somit einen wichtigen Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis der dramatischen Technik Senecas.

The Roman Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211 A.D.) originated from the North-African town of Lepcis Magna. His reign is seen as a time in which profound changes within Roman society became evident resulting in many provincials achieving important positions in the Roman state. The book examines this development from the perspective of a possible use of the non-Italian home and deities of the Emperor within Imperial iconographics. Important evidence for that are the native deities propagated by the Emperor. The book further discusses the relationship of Severus towards Roman gods and a possible sacralisation of the Emperor which might suggest changing attitudes towards the Emperor. The latter however has to be critically assessed and asked who was responsible for certain images. Was it the Imperial house or were it other groups? Der römische Kaiser Septimius Severus (193-211 n. Chr.) stammte aus dem nordafrikanischen Lepcis Magna. Seine Regierung wird als eine Zeit des Umbruchs charakterisiert, geprägt von einer Veränderung der römischen Gesellschaft, in die nun immer mehr Provinzialen in führende Positionen kamen und eine Verschiebung des Zentrums weg von Rom erfolgte. In dem Buch wird dieser Entwicklung aus der Perspektive der möglichen Instrumentalisierung einer nicht-italischen Heimat des Kaisers in der kaiserlichen Repräsentation nachgegangen. Wichtigstes Zeugnis dafür sind heimatliche Götter, die vom Kaiserhaus propagiert wurden. Außerdem betrachtet das Buch die religionspolitischen Schwerpunktsetzungen des Kaisers und die auf seine Person bezogenen Sakralisierungstendenzen, die auf eine möglicherweise veränderte Auffassung des Kaisertums zurückschließen lassen, wobei insbesondere zu fragen ist, ob dies auf das Kaiserhaus oder andere Gruppen zurückzuführen ist.

This is the first complete commentary for ninety years on the surviving poems of Bacchylides. Part I, covering the Victory Odes, was published in 1982. Part II, with the Dithyrambs and the fragments of Bacchylides' other books, now completes the work. Like the first part, this volume contains an introduction, the Greek text with facing German prose translation, the commentary, and the indices to Parts I and II. Bacchylides, a contemporary of Pindar, was one of the nine \'classical\' lyric poets whose songs were collected, edited and studied by the scholars of Alexandria. The commentary, in addition to providing linguistic and factual information, aims to highlight the poet's qualities of style and composition which have so far been generally underrated.
