Johann Ludwig von Wolzogen's Philosophical and Political Thought : A Confrontation with the Ideas of Descartes and Szlichtyng, with Selected Translations /
:
This volume presents the first English translations of the writings of Johann Ludwig von Wolzogen (c. 1599-1661)-theologian, philosopher, and mathematician-who emerged as one of the leading figures of the Polish Brethren, also known as the Socinians or Arians. It highlights Wolzogen's distinctive contribution to early modern European philosophy and intellectual culture, revealing the depth and originality of his engagement with the major religious and philosophical debates of his time. The accompanying introduction situates his thought within the wider currents of seventeenth-century discourse, demonstrating how the Polish Brethren-one of Europe's most innovative and reform-minded movements-anticipated key themes of modernity, including religious rationalism, toleration, and social reform.

Consular Jurisdiction : On the History of the Judicial Functions of Consulates (12th-20th Century) /
:
For today's practitioners, the history of the judicial functions of consulates is far more colourful and obscure than modern consular law might suggest. Take, for instance, Consul Annibale de Rossetti in Egypt, who had to arbitrate a lawsuit between two German merchants and was completely overwhelmed. De Rossetti neither knew German nor was he familiar with the law he was expected to apply. Modern consuls often react with disbelief at the fact that their predecessors acted not only as judges, but also as regulatory authorities and bailiffs. This volume brings together contributions on the history of the legal roles and functions of consulates, spanning from America to China and from their origins in the Middle Ages to the modern consulate. Contributors are: Marcella Aglietti, Eleonora Angella, Arnaud Bartolomei, Thibault Bechini, Giorgio Ennas, Ana Belem Fernández Castro, Juliette Françoise, Laura Galoppini, Sacha Gauthier Olssy, Thomas Gidney, Berna Kamay-Ulusay, Jessica Marglin, Cédric Quertier, Lars Regula, Victor Simon, Jörg Ulbert, and Dominique Valérian.

Al-Maqrīzī's al-Ḫabar ʿan al-bašar. Vol. III : Section 1: The Genealogies of ʿAdnān and His Descendants /
:
This section of al-Ḫabar ʿan al-bašar , the last work of the fifteenth-century historian al-Maqrīzī, presents an overview of the genealogies of the pre-Islamic northern Arabs, regarded as the descendants of the apical ancestor figure ʿAdnān. Al-Maqrīzī's text is embedded in the broader context of the genealogical tradition as a major organising principle in premodern Muslim historiography. The volume highlights the segmentary nature of Bedouin society, which resulted in inherently controversial tribal genealogies and historical traditions. The existence of many conflicting versions of the same pedigrees (and of the historical narratives undergirding each version) affected the Muslim historian's work in subtle but profound ways.

Immunity and Contagion: Transformations of Biopolitics in the Time of Pandemic /
:
How does the pandemic affect the notion of biopolitics? Immunity and Contagion offers a twofold perspective on the notion of biopolitics: on the one hand, it examines the negative effects of the pandemic, such as mourning, melancholy, dispossession, affective disorders, as well as social and racial inequalities; on the other hand, it reveals the need to redefine biopolitics as a positive attempt to survey, govern, and overcome the crisis. The pandemic encourages us to reformulate biopolitics in positive terms so that it would take into account all forms of human, biological, and geological life and becomes capable of operating on a planetary scale.

Theôria as Cognition in Plato /
:
How Plato appropriated the pilgrim's theôria into his own philosophy has been the subject of many noble and insightful studies. When Plato took up this concept, he launched an understanding that would have a very long life in classical philosophy: the idea that doing philosophy itself has an essentially contemplative character was now explicitly formulated. But this only leads us to the next question: according to Plato, what is the nature of this contemplation as a form of cognition? How does philosophy, understood as theôria and as a cognitive activity, relate to other forms of cognition-perception, memory, recollection, imagination, and emotion? The essays collected in this book explore the nature of theôria as cognition, while also taking into account the metaphors, dramatic settings, and cultural background that frame Plato's dialogues, showing it to be not only a "way of life" but also a form of knowledge.

Afropean Biblical Studies : Constructing a Nigerian/British Women's Hermeneutic /
:
Step into the pioneering field of Afropean Biblical Studies. This book constructs a Nigerian/British women's hermeneutic that reshapes how we read the New Testament, blending feminist, postcolonial, and decolonial approaches. In this book, readers will meet the author through her autobiographical reflections, which, alongside rich literary and cultural insights, illuminate fresh readings of biblical characters-like Herodias's daughter (Mark 6:17-28; Matthew 14:3-12) and the woman who washed Jesus' feet (Luke 7:36-50)-and engage popular contemporary novels, including Bernardine Evaristo's Girl, Woman, Other . Original, innovative, and methodologically bold, it challenges Western-dominated scholarship and opens new horizons in biblical interpretation.

Emotions, Ethics and Mass Atrocities : Perspectives from Scholars, Teachers and Practitioners /
:
"I can vividly recall the feeling of exhaustion I felt listening to this harrowing account. ... At the same time I felt a deep respect for this man who was able to tell his story with great serenity, and I was bothered by my own fatigue and loneliness, which felt so futile next to his." An Michels, team leader at the Victims and Witnesses Section, International Criminal Court . Mass atrocities cause horrendous suffering. Scholars, students and practitioners who grapple with these crimes are continuously exposed to victims' suffering, perpetrators' ordinariness and imperfect transitional justice mechanisms. How do we cope with our emotions? What ethical implications then arise? Private conversations among colleagues have often taken place hesitantly, fearful it will distract from the actual work. This book, however, brings these conversations to the fore through a series of deeply personal and purposeful reflections to open up new and important conversations. Contributors are: Andy Aydin-Aitchison, Annalisa Battista, Thijs B. Bouwknegt, Anne-Marie de Brouwer, Patrick Cammaert, Koko Christiaanse, Marije Luitjens, Brianne McGonigle Leyh, An Michels, Caecilia Johanna van Peski, Furtuna Sheremeti, Alette Smeulers, Maartje Weerdesteijn and Martin Witteveen.
