The Old Spanish Bible of Moshe Arragel : Introduction and Prologue. Volume 1 /
:
The Arragel Bible-a 15th century Spanish Bible translation with commentary by Moshe Arragel of Guadalajara-is a monumental work of Hispano-Jewish scholarship, an Old Spanish literary classic, and a privileged historical source on Jewish-Christian relations in medieval Iberia. The studies in Volume 1 of our edition in progress review three aspects of this Ibero-Jewish classic by way of introduction: its content and significance for the religious history and literatures of late medieval Spain; a linguistic analysis of Arragel's Castilian-his lexical choices, morphology, and syntax-in its Ibero-Romance context; and an analytic description of the extant illuminated codex in Madrid.

Fluid Phenomena : The River and Anthropocene Life-world in the Asia-Pacific /
:
The Fluid Phenomena explores the "life-world" of the riverspace that has shaped the ecological, economic, cultural, and governing processes, affecting both humans and other-than-humans in the Asia-Pacific region, including parts of South Asia, Southeast Asia, Japan and Australia. Using interdisciplinary conceptual and methodological tools, the book ties together three strands of human engagements with rivers: the representation of the river as a other-than-human entity in intellectual discourse, indigeneity, and creative imagination; the layered livelihood activities as supported and endangered by the river; and the governance of the river from the vantage point of development projects and popular responses. In doing so, the book demonstrates the centrality of and predicaments faced by the river in the late Anthropocene.

The Hidden Meinong, 1853-1875 : Politics, Religion, Education, History /
:
This book tells several stories: from Alexius Meinong's life up to his university years, stories about the social, political and cultural environment where he grew up, stories that he tells in his oeuvre-the story of Arnold of Brescia, of the Jesuit order, of education in Austria and moments of Austrian history in the 19th century. This book is about history, politics, religion and education, and it is about 'that arch-plague nationalism which has poisoned the flower of our European culture' (Stefan Zweig, The World of Yesterday ).

Greek Lyric and the Sacred : Studies in Archaic and Classical Greek Song, vol. 6 /
:
Herodotus credits Homer and Hesiod with providing the Greeks with the image of their gods, but Greek lyric had a lot to say about this as well. This book examines the engagement of early Greek lyric poetry with the divine in the light of new scholarly approaches, both to lyric and to Greek religion, and the discovery of new lyric fragments in the last few decades. It focuses on the religious contexts in which lyric poetry was performed, the imagery used for the divine, and the communication between humans and gods expressed in these texts.

War, Revolt and Sacred Space : Cambrai and the Southern Netherlands, 1566-c.1621 /
:
Churches and sacred spaces were devastated by warfare and confessional violence in the southern Netherlands during the late sixteenth century. This monograph explores how these churches were rebuilt, the material culture of worship repaired or replaced, and their sanctity restored. Work began in the immediate aftermath of the iconoclasm and rebellion of 1566-67 and continued into the early seventeenth century. How this was achieved and the multiple agents involved is analysed across the Francophone dioceses of the ecclesiastical province of Cambrai. This restoration coincided with the reassertion and revitalisation of Catholic devotion embodied in the Tridentine decrees. Drawing on extensive archival research, as well as buildings, church furnishings and religious art, this monograph provides an alternative perspective on political upheaval and Catholic renewal in the southern Netherlands under Philip II of Spain and the Archdukes Albert and Isabella.

Alexius Meinong. Frühe Schriften 1872-1875. Arnold von Brescia und andere Aufsätze /
:
The writings contained in Alexius Meinong, Frühe Schriften 1872-1875 introduce us to a Meinong who has hitherto remained hidden, thereby offering us a fuller picture of his character and thought. The editor's introduction gives an account of Meinong's university years in Vienna between 1870 and 1875, when he attended Brentano's lectures and seminars. Meinong's newspaper articles from that time, the manuscripts contained in his estate and the dissertation on Arnold of Brescia reveal the young Meinong's educational as well as historical interests, alongside his political and religious views, which are not presented in his later works. The book also explains Meinong's transition from history to philosophy, a topic so far neglected by scholars.

Pentecostal Communion Ecclesiology : An Ecumenical Proposal /
:
Koinonia has become the standard by which any biblically founded ecclesiology is measured. It serves as the foundation upon which ecumenical dialogue concerning the nature and purpose of the Church is built. Universal communion ecclesiology has emerged as increasingly prominent within the ecumenical movement, and many now consider it the foundation of ecumenism and of ecclesiological discourse. Communion ecclesiology has proven popular not only in Faith and Order Papers on the Church, originating in the World Council of Churches, but also in a number of bilateral dialogues and among noteworthy theologians across the ecumenical spectrum. Unfortunately, Pentecostal theologians have neither readily embraced this concept of the Church nor entered into the theological discourse in meaningful ways of significant impact. Few Pentecostal theologians have entered the conversation at all. The relative lack of attention to the subject by Pentecostal theologians demonstrates the significant need for this study. This study discusses the relevance of communion ecclesiology to both the ecumenical movement and Pentecostalism. It examines the ecclesiological views of Simon Chan, Miroslav Volf, and Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen, exploring how they help facilitate a more robust Pentecostal ecclesiology that has the capacity to engage in ecumenical dialogue.

"Speaking the Words": Linguistic Variation in the Pyramid Texts /
:
This book investigates the linguistic diversity of the ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts and what this diversity can reveal about the origins of the corpus and, more broadly, ancient Egypt in the Old Kingdom. It argues that the inclusion of linguistically diverse ritual utterances in the royal corpus of the Pyramid Texts was an intentional and active program by the royal court to incorporate ritual practices from the entire spectrum of Egyptian geography and society into the mortuary texts used by the king. The inclusion of ritual utterances representing all of Egypt thereby legitimized and monumentalized the authority of the king as the ruler of the totality of Egypt. In the book, the author describes the different categories of linguistic variation that exist in the Pyramid Texts. For each variant, there is a discussion of geographical, social, or chronological markers in the ritual utterances themselves that give clues as to where, when, or by whom that particular language variety would have been used. The author also draws on comparisons with Old Kingdom texts outside of the Pyramid Texts in order to map the distribution of the discussed linguistic variants throughout Egypt in order to produce a dialectical sketch of Old Kingdom Egypt. Additionally, this book situates the collection of the Pyramid Texts corpus into the historical context of the end of the Old Kingdom.

H.P. Lovecraft and Posthumanism /
:
The present book is the first monograph detailing the intriguing connections between H. P. Lovecraft's weird fiction and posthumanism. More than a retrospective reinterpretation, H. P. Lovecraft and Posthumanism enacts a productive dialogue between Lovecraft's "cosmic indifferentist" philosophy and contemporary post-anthropocentrism. In more ways than one, Lovecraft's literary and philosophical output alike presaged our contemporary era, one in which the primacy of the human is becoming open to question. The crisis-ridden darkness we face today is revealed as signalling the advent of the posthuman "strange aeon," the Age of Lovecraft.

Repetition and Variation in Literature and Music /
:
The creation of meaningful and beautiful similarities as part of a pattern or structure is among the most important means humankind has developed in order to create, or respond to, order in various contexts and for various purposes. In the arts, similarity is among the most general aesthetic features which have informed all levels of works of art across cultures and times. It may range from all but zero difference between individual occurrences of a phenomenon ('repetition') to recognizable 'variations' of the same. The present volume focusses on the manifold forms and functions which repetition and variation can have in both literature and music.

Empathy and Deliberation: The Case for a Phenomenological Approach /
:
Empathy is often seen as a window into others' minds, effectively guiding our decisions and moral judgments about them. But what if this assumption is dangerously wrong? This book challenges the popular view of empathy as a desirable ally in our deliberative processes, revealing the pitfalls of this tool. Drawing on insights from moral philosophy, philosophy of mind, epistemology, and applied psychology, the book argues that the standard definition of empathy-combining perspective-taking, emotional sharing, and concern for others-can be dangerously inaccurate and motivate immoral actions or unfair judgments. To address these shortcomings, this work offers a novel phenomenological approach. Building on Edith Stein's account, alongside contributions from Husserl, Scheler, and contemporary phenomenologists, it redefines empathy as a quasi-perceptual, quasi-imaginative experience of others' inner states, recognizing them as persons with unique motives and values. This phenomenological approach provides a better conceptual framework for understanding empathy and its role in deliberation while avoiding problematic consequences of popular definitions in the literature.
