We zijn in Scheveningen, in de winter van 1735. Over enkele ogenblikken zullen we getuige zijn van een merkwaardige begrafenis. Niet van een mens, maar van een hele beweging. Het is de Nederlandse vrijmetselarij die hier haar uitvaart zal beleven; symbolisch, zoals men in de achttiende-eeuwse literatuur ook een krant, een ideologie, ja zelfs een mens ten grave kon dragen. Met inachtneming van alle - toen in zwang zijnde - ceremoniële regels. De Haagse auteurs Albertus Frese en Christiaen Schaef zaten barstensvol leedvermaak toen zij De Uitvaert van het vryje Metzelaersgilde construeerden. Kort daarvóór was de vrijmetselarij door de Staten van Holland en West-Friesland verboden verklaard. Met dit gelegenheidstoneelstukje gaven zij uiting aan een in de achttiende eeuw algemeen verbreid wantrouwen jegens een orde, die haar leden (althans op papier) op straffe des doods verplichtte tot absolute geheimhouding van wat er in de loge gebeurde. Dit riekte naar losbandige praktijken die het daglicht niet konden velen. Mogelijk was zelfs homosexualiteit in het spel, in die tijd een zonde, waarop de doodstraf stond. De Uitvaert van het vryje Metzelaersgilde verdient het om opnieuw - voorzien van een uitgebreide inleiding en annotaties - uitgegeven te worden. Niet alleen omdat het de eerste anti-maçonnieke tekst is die in onze taal verscheen. Maar ook omdat het een momentopname biedt van een onrustige tijd, waarin geruchten grote gevolgen konden hebben. De Uitvaert is bovendien een gaaf voorbeeld van het in de achttiende eeuw zo populaire schertsbegrafenisgenre. De indertijd beroerde reputatie van het doodbiddersgilde - trefwoorden: vies, voos, vilein - heeft in belangrijke mate aan dit succes bijgedragen. Met een bijdrage van Arno van den Brand.

The language of Ḫaṣāʾiṣ is reputed to be difficult to access, and the thought of its author relatively opaque. With this book, readers now have a key to penetrate the linguistic thought of one of the most important grammarians in the Arabic grammatical tradition. It shows how Ibn Ǧinnī used the concepts of the episteme of his time to systematize grammatical explanatory reasoning. On reading this book, the reader will also perceive the importance attached by Ibn Ǧinnī to the role played by the speaker in language change, in that the speaker is seen as the true agent (ʿāmil) of his discourse. This work also offers the reader a broader perspective on Ibn Ǧinnī's relationship with the grammatical tradition, as it shows, for example, that most of Ibn Ǧinnī's diachronic reflections are borrowed from one of Sībawayhi's forgotten disciples (180/796): al-Aḫfaš al-Awsaṭ (215/830).
