Bulls, Bears, Boers and Brits : Finance and the Coming of War in Southern Africa, 1894-1899 /
:
In the 1890s financial speculation and market manipulation were prominent features of the Southern African gold mining industry. Extravagantly capitalised, starved of working capital, and poorly managed, many mines could not be made to pay. Investors suffered more at the hands of Randlords than they did than they did from those of the Boer Government in Pretoria. By failing to take any of this into serious consideration, accounts that focus on mining company complaints as the root cause of the Jameson Raid and the outbreak of war in 1899 are missing a key dimension of the past.

Proclus on Whole and Part: A Reappraisal of Mereology in Neoplatonic Metaphysics /
:
No late ancient philosopher has written more extensively on part-whole relations than the Neoplatonic commentator Proclus. In Proclus on Whole and Part , Arthur Oosthout unfolds, for the first time, Proclus' detailed and systematic analysis of (Neo-)Platonic mereology in full. Oosthout weaves together a great number of previously disconnected scholarly inquiries into Proclus, while adding many critical notes and new insights of his own. He bases this new synthesis on a detailed theoretical framework built not only on the metaphysical theories of Plato and Aristotle, but also on the arguments of prominent scholars of modern mereology.

Scottish Literature of the South Seas : Critical Studies of Scotland and the Pacific /
:
This volume, edited by Richard J. Hill and Allison E. Francis, explores literary connections between Scotland and the Pacific. The contributors, including some of the world's foremost scholars in Scottish and Pacific studies, examine how Scottish writing about the Pacific, and Pacific engagement with Scottish culture, generates a cultural examination of Scotland's place in the British colonizing hierarchy. While Robert Louis Stevenson was the principal Scottish author who shaped these early discussions, other prominent Scottish authors are also analyzed. Several chapters examine Scottish engagement with the South Seas, before and after Stevenson's involvement with Pacific cultural and political affairs. The book lends weight and understanding as to why Pacific Islanders-both immigrant and indigenous-often claim affiliations with Scotland, and in the case of Hawaii and Samoa, to Stevenson in particular. Enduring Encounters: Maps of Japan from Leiden University Library /
:
While Asian and Western cartographies are often considered separate traditions, maps of Japan kept in Leiden University Libraries often show a commonality of method and purpose. Despite the expulsion of Phillip Franz von Siebold from Japan in 1829, the norm was for friendly exchanges of scientific knowledge. One of the highlights of this volume are annotated drafts and proofs of Siebold's map of Japan, published and discussed for the first time alongside Japanese source maps. Five essays by worldwide experts in the history of cartography and of Dutch-Japanese relations accompany extensive catalogue entries for over fifty maps. Contributors are: Aoyama Hiro'o, Edward Boyle, Radu Leca, Martijn Storms, and Uesugi Kazuhiro.
