Theoria, praxis, and the contemplative life after Plato and Aristotle /

: Studies of the notion of theoria and of the contemplative life have often been restricted to Plato and Aristotle. This volume shows that aspirations to contemplation and the life of the intellect survived long after the classical period, turning into topics of heated debates, powerful arguments and original applications throughout the Hellenistic, imperial, and late antique periods. The introduction attempts to reconstruct all the problems pertaining to the contemplative life in Antiquity, and the twelve papers, written by distinguished scholars, offer a thorough study of the appropriation, criticism and transformation of Plato's and Aristotle's positions on the contemplative life, including its epistemological and metaphysical foundation. The volume ranges from Theophrastus to the end of Antiquity, including Jewish and Christian authors, with a focus on Platonism from Cicero to Damascius.

Theôria as Cognition in Plato /

: How Plato appropriated the pilgrim's theôria into his own philosophy has been the subject of many noble and insightful studies. When Plato took up this concept, he launched an understanding that would have a very long life in classical philosophy: the idea that doing philosophy itself has an essentially contemplative character was now explicitly formulated. But this only leads us to the next question: according to Plato, what is the nature of this contemplation as a form of cognition? How does philosophy, understood as theôria and as a cognitive activity, relate to other forms of cognition-perception, memory, recollection, imagination, and emotion? The essays collected in this book explore the nature of theôria as cognition, while also taking into account the metaphors, dramatic settings, and cultural background that frame Plato's dialogues, showing it to be not only a "way of life" but also a form of knowledge.

Thinking, knowing, acting : epistemology and ethics in Plato and ancient Platonism /

: The volume Thinking, Knowing, Acting: Epistemology and Ethics in Plato and Ancient Platonism aims to offer a fresh perspective on the correlation between epistemology and ethics, a topic of central importance in the Platonic tradition which has not yet received the attention it deserves. The first part deals with the social, juridical premises of Plato's philosophy, with particular regard to the relation between science and practical reason. The second part investigates the reception and development of these problems in Aristotle and the Platonic tradition. Other papers, on Solon and Galen, show that the conflict between knowledge and political action was also a central topic for the other Greek thinkers and contribute by contrast to a better evaluation of the originality of Platonism.
