Gianluca Miniaci
Gianluca Miniaci is an Italian Egyptologist, currently Associate Professor at the University of Pisa.He studied from 1999 to 2004 Classical Archaeology and wrote his dissertation in Egyptology on "The royal necropolis of the 17th dynasty at Dra Abu el-Naga (Thebes west)". This work received an honor. In 2008 he finished his PhD in Egyptian Archaeology at the University of Pisa, titled "The funerary culture at the end of the Second Intermediate Period: the emergence of the rishi coffin style". He continued his academic formation in London, Institute of Archaeology, UCL and in Paris, École Pratique des Hautes Études, EPHE, thanks to two Individual Marie Curie Fellowships. He worked in the most renowned museums, as the British Museum and the Musée du Louvre.
Miniaci is directing an archaeological mission in the site of Zawyet el-Maiyitin (Menya, Egypt) and he is deputy-director of the University of Pisa excavation at Thebes, in the cemetery of Dra Abu el-Naga. He is editor-in-chief of the international series "Middle Kingdom Studies", Golden House Publications, of the "Journal of Egyptian History", Brill-Leiden, and of the series "Ancient Egypt in Context" (together with Juan Carlos Moreno Garcia and Anna Stevens), from the Cambridge University Press.

This is the second of two volumes that explores the world of faience figurines in Egypt and the adjacent areas of the Levant and Nubia during the Middle Bronze Age (2100-1550 BC). Its companion volume is titled Miniature Forms as Transformative Thresholds (BMPES 7). This volume serves as a catalogue raisonne for faience figurines and provides a detailed analysis and description of over 1150 pieces along with their archaeological and museological contexts. The volume is accompanied by numerous drawings, photos, cards, archival material, graphs, tables, maps, and plans. The research is primarily based on material coming from documented archaeological contexts, with two main unpublished cores from Lisht and Byblos, but also includes material from more than 150 sites. The museological research focuses on three main collections: the Petrie Museum, the British Museum, and the Musee du Louvre, but also encompasses a total of 35 different museums in 33 different cities across Europe, Northern Africa, Western Asia, Russia, and the USA, as well as private collections and public auctions. From prehistoric figurines and graffiti to modern digital photographs, human beings repeatedly produced images, transforming the world itself into a relentless fabric of images. This volume presents the proceedings of the international conference held at the Institute of Archaeology - UCL, London in 2014 inside the framework of the European project 'EPOCHs', with the aim to explore the fertile imaginary world of Middle Bronze Age Egypt (2000-1500 BC). The final goal is to highlight theoretical and methodological issues in order to explore connections between the images and their society, people who created images and who were recursively affected by the images they created.
