Exploiting the alternate roles of actor and courtier, he progressed from social success to artistic achievement but, to the dissatisfaction of his royal patrons, Molière put the priorities of his own authorial status before the notion of service at Court; important new bibliographical material illustrates his long war in defence of his authorial rights against a cartel of unscrupulous publishers. The six chapters of this absorbing study challenge the current orthodoxy of a programmatic ideology in Molière's work. Raising basic questions about the writer's perception of her/himself, and about the French cult of classicism, this work will interest all specialists of seventeenth-century French theatre and social history. Une carrière qui se définit lentement, cherchant un point d'équilibre entre les demandes opposées de ses protecteurs à la Cour d'une part et celles des éditeurs peu scrupuleux de la Communauté des libraires de l'autre. S'appuyant sur des sources d'époque, l'auteur présente une étude neuve qui éclaire pour la première fois un conflit d'intérêt majeur mais peu documenté dans la carrière de Molière. Ayant savamment exploité ses talents d'acteur et de courtisan afin d'atteindre les limites de son art, le chef de la troupe du Roi finit par affirmer des priorités indépendantes et peu appréciées à la Cour, celles de son propre statut d'auteur. Présentée en six chapitres, soulevant des questions fondamentales sur le statut de l'écrivain au 17e siècle et sur la nature même du classicisme (si mal compris en dehors de la France), cette étude intéressera tous les spécialistes du théâtre et de l'histoire sociale du 17e siècle français.
