Arts-Based Research and the Practice of Freedom in Education : Reflections from a Doctoral Course /

: Arts-Based Research and the Practice of Freedom in Education advocates for the inclusion of arts-based research in doctoral education programs and, indeed, in educational programs at all levels. The doing of art to investigate ideas, situations, and experiences embraces bell hooks' concept of education as the practice of freedom, a practice in which everyone can learn and every voice counts. Through the use of photography, collage, painting, sculpture, textile arts and dance, 10 current and former doctoral students who had enrolled in an arts-based research course show and write about how arts-based methods enriched their educational experiences, celebrated their wholeness by dissolving the barriers between their scholar-artist-teacher-activist selves, and affirmed the inner-artist even in those who doubted they had one. Furthermore, their work establishes that arts-based research can reveal dimensions of experience that elude traditional research methods. Contributors are: Michael Alston, Kelly Bare, Shawn F. Criminalization : Politics and Policies /

: Criminalization: Politics and Policies provides a thorough analysis of the relationship between politics, policies, and criminalization. Through diverse perspectives and scholarly essays, it explores the multifaceted issues in criminal justice, law, and governance. The book scrutinizes the impact of law, society, politics, and penal populism on criminalization across legal systems, advocating for a reassessment of criminal law's scope. It delves into the prevalence of resorting to criminalization for social issues, urging for a critical review. Additionally, it examines the normative foundations of criminalization, addressing 'over'-criminalization and exploring its empirical and normative aspects. The anthology also considers the roles of prosecutorial and judicial discretion, as well as State preventive powers, in over-criminalization. Whether a scholar, policymaker, or citizen, readers gain insights into the expansion of criminal laws and their consequences, making it a valuable resource for understanding the dynamics of law, politics, and power in criminal justice. Writing Is Revision : Compositions from the Feminist Fringe /

: Through her use of the scholarly personal narrative and braided essay form, McGowan weaves strands of rhetoric with creative writing, navigating complex themes with academic rigor and emotional introspection. Her blend of equal parts humor, gravitas, and scholarship invites readers to explore the complexities of being a woman in a male-dominated world while looking at how writers might use coping mechanisms and transgressive workarounds, from code-switching to storytelling. With critical analyses of feminist discourse and a roadmap for navigating the ever-evolving landscape of gender politics, the essays in this book challenge us to rethink traditional thinking about gender and equality. Writing is Revision is a call to action, an ode to the power of the written word for anyone interested in feminism and literature.

Refusals and Reflections : Teaching and Learning Social Justice in Qualitative Research /

: Though qualitative research methods shape scholarship around the globe, and institutions worldwide offer qualitative coursework, there is very little explicit discussion on how to effectively teach qualitative research. Instead, a standard approach is for instructors to gain in-depth expertise in qualitative methodologies, with little or no pedagogical training. The effect is a continuous and nearly exclusive emphasis on content knowledge that undermines the preparation of novice researchers as both teachers and learners. This book works to fill that gap by offering perspectives, strategies, and applications from instructor and student perspectives, based on a semester-long class emphasizing social justice in qualitative research. This edited volume offers sections on pedagogical strategies, students' responses to and applications of those concepts, and then instructor reflections. The goal is to offer an important starting point for explicit discussions on how qualitative research might be taught and learned, in addition to how it might be thoughtfully and ethically conducted. The Impact of Multiculturalism on Public Education, 50 Years Later : A Home for All? /

: This volume grew out of a symposium held at the University of Alberta in March 2021 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of official multiculturalism in Canada. Scholars gathered online during the Covid-19 pandemic to take stock and reflect on the extent and ways multiculturalism legislation and evolving policy has impacted education. Scholars used varied and contrasting approaches to educational theory to think about multiculturalism and its impacts, including terror management theory, the riddle scale, art theory and pentimenti, transitional justice, intraminority and interminority relations, the null curriculum, and ideas of cultural humility, hope, and cultural comfort, among others.

The State and Education in Latin America : Fault Lines, Foundations, and Alternatives /

: This book departs from the position that research on education reform in Latin America does not go far enough when it comes to considering the origins and limitations that are at the heart of the State itself. While it is valuable to portray contemporary political processes, it is just as important to make visible the characteristics and limits of the underlying (State) foundation(s) through which and upon which reforms are introduced. In doing so, this book not only helps to shed light on the reasons for policy success or failure but also facilitates analysis that pairs historical considerations on the nature and development of the State together with current findings related to the effects of (political-economic) globalization-all while being attentive to the way that these historical and contemporary forces affect, operate through or are contested by education. Mediations: The Silent Workshops of Democracy /

: For the past four decades, mediation practices have been steadily developing in Western societies, offering new ways for citizens to coexist peacefully. Unlike most works that focus on a single country or field, this book provides a comprehensive international overview of the development and implementation of mediation in all its forms. It explores the history and philosophy of mediation, outlines its ethical and professional principles, and presents the diverse models that guide practitioners. Departing from the dogmatic perspectives often found in the specialist literature, it proposes a flexible and adaptable approach to conflict that can be applied across a wide range of contexts-political, environmental, judicial, family, social, educational, commercial, and health.Through a socio-political and empirical lens, the book highlights the considerable promise of this non-violent method of conflict resolution, while also critically examining its dangers and limitations.
