Naga ed-Dêr in the First Intermediate Period /

Beginning in 1901, George A. Reisner conducted a number of excavating campaigns in the neighbourhood of the modern village of Naga ed-Der in Upper Egypt, opposite the ancient city of Thinis, at first for the Hearst Expedition of the University of California (up to 1905) and thereafter for the Harvard University-Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition.0Naga ed-Der is important because of a series of ancient cemeteries extending in time from the Predynastic period to the Middle Kingdom. These cemeteries run for about six kilometres from Sheikh Farag on the north to Mesheikh on the south and form parts of a single large cemetery of the Thinite nome UE 8. In the course of the excavations at Naga ed-Der, Reisner discovered in addition extensive remains of the First Intermediate period-decorated tombs, steles, and inscribed coffins-belonging to the period extending from the end of the Sixth to the Eleventh Dynasties. The Predynastic, Early Dynastic, and Old Kingdom material from Naga ed-Der has been studied and published by Reisner and Arthur C. Mace and by Albert M. Lythgoe and Dows Dunham. Dows Dunham published seventy-five steles from Reisner's excavations in 1937.0This volume endeavours to date the material found by Reisner, including the inscribed stones published by Dunham, with a view to elucidating the history of the site in the period between the Old and Middle Kingdoms. Furthermore, a number of steles seen on the art market or in museums or private collections which, by their style, belong clearly to Naga ed-Der, have been added as supplementary material.

Dynastie datiert, zeigt ein Dekorations- und Beschriftungsprogramm, das sich gegen gefährliche Tiere wendet. Insbesondere gibt es Rezitationssprüche gegen Krokodile und Schlangen, die in der Rolle der Götterfeinde Maga und Apopis stilisiert werden. Der Spruch gegen Apopis ist auch aus mehreren anderen Quellen bekannt, die von der 20. Dynastie bis ins späte 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. datieren, wobei er in unterschiedlichen Situierungen auf verschiedenartigen Textträgern unterschiedlich ausführlich überliefert wird. Die vorliegende Publikation diskutiert das Objekt in seiner Materialität, rekonstruiert seine antike und moderne Biographie und bietet eine Übersetzung der Sprüche mit ausführlichem Kommentar. This study proceeds from a previous analysis of the leadership characteristics of the military pharaohs to their underlying war records to the literary compositions that the pharaohs had drawn up for their glorification. A study of these court-inspired accounts fits within the overarching new perspectives of royally directed and inspired ancient Egyptian literature. The historical background covers the New Kingdom pharaohs Kamose, Thutmose III, Ramesses II and III, with Merenptah, plus Pianchy. The concentration is primarily upon the narrative structures employed in each of these king's monumental inscriptions.

"The Horus Gate brings to a close the two-thousand-year-old cycle which saw Edfu and Dendara united by the closest religious ties. The domain to which it gave access constitutes an enclave within the southern city (Edfu). Horus joins Hathor, and both celebrate Osiris Pa-Akhem, in whose quadruple spirit are subsumed Re, Sokar, Horus, and Osiris. The texts indicate that the Osirian workshop was located in the domain of Horus; from there, the processions went to the Osirian necropolis, the site where the mysteries of Khoiak were performed at Dendara. Completely unpublished until now, the texts and representations from the Horus Gate, decorated in the names of Antoninus Pius (138-161 AD) and Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD), constitute the final priestly production from a city already flourishing in the Old Kingdom."--Page 4 of cover.

Der Begriff impliziert, dass man die agyptischen Ritualszenen lesen und deuten kann, sobald man ihnen mit dem notwendigen Wissen begegnet. Bild und Text sind auf den Wanden agyptischer Tempel, und nicht nur dort, inhaltlich eng miteinander verbunden. Sie nehmen Rucksicht auf die Architektur, auf Rituale, auf die Topographie u.a.m. Diese Wechselbeziehung war Thema der 12. Agyptischen Tempeltagung, die der Corona-Pandemie wegen abgesagt werden musste, deren geplante Vortrage jedoch nun in diesem Band publiziert werden. In den zwolf Beitragen (deutsch, englisch, franzosisch) wird untersucht, inwieweit Bild und Text in agyptischen Tempeln aufeinander Rucksicht nahmen, welche Fehler beim Anbringen an Tempelwanden entstanden und wie man sie ggf. korrigierte. Wie wurde in den Darstellungen reagiert, wenn man Besonderheiten in den Texten beachten musste und umgekehrt? Solche Besonderheiten ergaben sich aus der Rucksichtnahme auf die Architektur, auf Neuentwicklungen und Traditionen. Angesprochen werden Beziehungen zwischen den Tempeln gemeinsamer Rituale, die Ubernahme von Texten und Bildern und von Neuerungen bei der Darstellung des Kultgeschehens. Die Beitrage werfen teils alte Fragen neu auf, etwa die Frage nach der Darstellung des realen, also dreidimensionalen Raums im Flachbild oder nach der beabsichtigten Vieldeutigkeit der Bilder, nach Konnotationen in Texten durch Auswahlen oder Anpassen von Hieroglyphen an die Darstellungen. Es wird auch thematisiert, wer die Texte und Darstellungen in den Raumlichkeiten der Tempel sehen und lesen konnte und wie z.B. Texte und Darstellungen der Ritualszenen auf die architektonischen Gegebenheiten eines Tempels, etwa Platzmangel durch Treppen und Turen, reagierten"--
