War and Journalism : The Presentation of Conflict and Provision of Actuality /

: It were journalists that made war accessible for private households since the 19th century. Detailed reports and images brought the front to the living room and people around the world could follow military action on a daily basis. The people who reported about wars therefore shaped the perceptions of the respective conflicts and could even turn into political agents. This volume presents several case studies demonstrating how war and journalism were tied together on multiple levels. The contributions reflect questions related to agency, description, perception and politics alike. The authors explore which role journalists actually played in times of war and conflict and how their work fits into the overall history of violence since the 19th century.

Ottoman women would have no place in politics; recluse in their harem, they would pass their time in superficial distractions or in pernicious intrigues: such is the heritage of Orientalism and traditional historiography. Far from these clichés, this work offers a dive into the Ottoman institutional and social frameworks, which govern the spectrum of social and political interactions of the women of the Ottoman court, taking as a field of study a figure largely ignored by historiography: the blood daughters of the Ottoman rulers - the sultanas.
This book offers a historical analysis of the political and social conditions of the Ottoman princesses in modern times, at the heart of a court society dominated by the logic of sexual discrimination. : 1 online resource. : Includes bibliographical references and index. : 9789004500402

Būluṣ ibn Rajāʾ : The Fatimid Egyptian Convert Who Shaped Christian Views of Islam /

: Būluṣ ibn Rajāʾ (ca. 955-ca. 1020) was a celebrated writer of Coptic Christianity from Fatimid Egypt. Born to an influential Muslim family in Cairo, Ibn Rajāʾ later converted to Christianity and composed The Truthful Exposer ( Kitāb al-Wāḍiḥ bi-l-Ḥaqq ) outlining his skepticism regarding Islam. His ideas circulated across the Middle East and the Mediterranean in the medieval period, shaping the Christian understanding of the Qurʾan's origins, Muḥammad's life, the practice of Islamic law, and Muslim political history. This book includes a study of Ibn Rajāʾ's life, along with an Arabic edition and English translation of The Truthful Exposer.

England's Second Domesday and the Expulsion of the English Peasantry /

: The world-shaking forced evictions of English peasants during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries are treated by most historians as largely a 'Tudor myth'. For them, the peasantry disappeared much later through fair means thanks to industrialisation and trade. Centred on close scrutiny of the royal commission of 1517 - 'England's Second Domesday' - this book overturns these accounts. It demonstrates, unequivocally, that capitalism carved fundamental and irreversible breaches into the English countryside between 1400 and 1620. It began, grew and thrived on widespread illegal clearances of rural people and their culture by the English ruling class, long before the British industrial revolution.

Exile and Execution in Medieval and Early Modern Society /

: In both exile and execution, society must be complicit; people must be willing to ostracize their neighbors or watch their execution, participating in the spectacle that reifies the power of the state. This collection investigates the relationship between the exiled and the landscape, physical or psychological, into which they are (dis)placed in conversation with accounts of execution, constructed by the authorities or invented to criticize the whole system. The essays cover a broad range of material including early Irish penitential literature, French courtly epics, English legendary histories, Spanish textual evidence of executions, and legal treatises governing both exile and execution in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. Contributors are Gillian Adler, Gila Aloni, Kim Bergqvist, Karen Casey Casebier, Westley Follet, Radosław Kotecki, Mireille J. Pardon, Ben Parsons, Bojana Radovanović, Abel de Lorenzo Rodríguez, Susan Small, and Larissa Tracy.

On Western Influences and the Transformation of Chinese Academic Thought /

: This book analyses the growth of disciplinary knowledge in modern China through Sino-foreign cultural exchange. It examines Western influences and the transformation of Chinese academic thought through "modern scientific disciplines" rather than mere westernization based on the "nationality" of knowledge. Historically, this transformation is not the unidirectional "eastward dissemination of Western learning," but the "introduction of West learning into China" with more active participation and choice by Chinese scholars. This understanding of the historical process focuses more on the innovation of the medium of knowledge, emphasizing the material and technological background of the dissemination of Western learning.

The Revolutionary Organisation : Armed Struggle from the Late 18th Century to the Present /

: This is the first comprehensive study of the phenomenon of the armed-struggle revolutionary organisation. The Revolutionary Organisation covers the period from the late 18th century to the present, is global in scope, and discusses organisations inspired by all main ideological traditions: communist, anti-colonialist, nationalist, democratic, Islamist, fascist, and white supremacist. The condition of life-and-death struggle with the state imposes similar patterns of operation upon these organisations, irrespective of their ideological inclinations. This work interprets armed-struggle revolutionary organisations as hybrids of three orientations: an apparatus of professional revolutionaries; an emotional community sustained by ideology, battle comradeship, and ritual; and an instrument of physical force nurturing an heroic organisational ethos.
