Why are people sometimes unable to change, even if they want to? Why is it so difficult to change political institutions, or to abandon outdated ways of thinking? This book suggests that we can understand the phenomenon of resistance to change in individuals and institutions by returning to Hegel, one of the most influential philosophers of historical and political change. Hegel exposes the paradox inherent in the notion of resistance: on the one hand, resistance to change is necessary to allow for identity and survival in a changing world, and to make stable societies possible; on the other hand, resistance to change also causes obsolete, irrational or repressive ideas and institutions to persist. This book not only presents a theory of inertia, a concept of great importance for philosophy and political theory, but also offers a wide-ranging interpretation of Hegel's philosophy, discussing his views on the will and on habits, on obsolete institutions and revolutionary transformations.

"Teils gab er in seinen Schriften vieles dem Publikum, das schon für seine Vorlesungen bearbeitet war" (Borowski 1804). Viele Elemente der kritischen Werke hat Kant in seinen Vorlesungen über Logik sukzessive entwickelt. Die erhaltenen Nachschriften geben Einblick in den Logiklehrbetrieb der Aufklärungszeit und in Kants philosophische Entwicklung. Viele Themen, die in der "Kritik der reinen Vernunft" angedeutet werden, werden in den Logiknachschriften ausführlicher erörtert. Aus der Zeit um 1782 liegen mehrere, textlich eng miteinander in Beziehung stehende Nachschriften vor. Ihr Inhalt geht auf die Logikvorlesungen Kants von etwa 1777 bis 1782 zurück. Die Nachschrift von J. W. Volckmann wird erstmals in dieser Studienausgabe zugänglich gemacht. Der Text ergänzt insbesondere zwei bereits edierte Nachschriften, die "Wiener-Logik" und die "Logik-Hechsel". Zudem wird ein bisher unbekanntes Fragment angehängt, das der "Logik-Hechsel" weitestgehend entspricht.

Why discuss disobedience in relation to Hegel? The answer lies in how his philosophy, particularly through his interpretation of Antigone, has sparked debates about the tension between individual choice and societal norms, and how feminist thought has challenged Hegelian traditions. Hegel's recognition of Antigone's disobedience as a necessary yet tragic act demonstrates his acknowledgement of the individual's role in shaping history beyond societal laws. However, Hegel didn't fully explore the conflict between nature (Antigone's personal choice) and culture (the laws of the community), which was later emphasized by feminist scholars such as Irigaray and de Beauvoir, who argued against patriarchal interpretations of Hegel's philosophy and promoted a critical re-reading. In doing so, they rejected the rigid universalism of Hegel's system in favor of an understanding and practice of difference. This volume focuses on how disobedience to Hegel allows for new interpretation.

This book examines Heidegger's controversial relation to politics as it grows out of his understanding of his predecessors in German Idealism, most notably, Hegel. This way of developing a dialogue between Heidegger and Hegel on the issue of politics provides an important context for questioning the former's link with National Socialism. Yet the book does not simply condemn Heidegger for his Nazi involvement nor claim that his thinking is free from dangerous political implications. On the contrary, a second level of questioning asks whether Heidegger's philosophy can be appropriated in alternative contexts which permit the affirmation of democratic principles. Thus the book concludes by examining the import which Heidegger's thought has on cultivating such democratic motifs as freedom of speech and civil disobedience. The book is especially of interest to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars in the areas of German idealism, phenomenology, social and political philosophy, and the history of philosophy.

In a meticulous commentary on the last three chapters of the Phenomenology of Spirit , which is carried out paragraph by paragraph, the logical structure of this work is analyzed. It is elaborated how this logical structure is made explicit in the (shorter) logic of the Enzyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften . This opens up access to two of Hegel's central works in a special way. First of all, it becomes clear in what way the Phenomenology of Spirit is a key to gaining access to the logic of the Enzyklopädie . But conversely, this logic also helps to gain a better understanding of the structure of the Phenomenology of Spirit . In einem akribischen Kommentar zu den letzten drei Kapiteln der Phänomenologie des Geistes , der Absatz für Absatz durchgeführt wird, wird der logische Aufbau dieser Arbeit analysiert. Es wird herausgearbeitet, wie diese logische Struktur in der (kleinen) Logik der Enzyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften explizit gemacht wird. Dies eröffnet in besonderer Weise den Zugang zu zwei zentralen Werken Hegels. Zunächst wird deutlich, inwiefern die Phänomenologie des Geistes ein Schlüssel ist, um Zugang zur Logik der Enzyklopädie zu erhalten.
