The Pyramid Age represents the first of several highpoints in ancient Egypt's long history. But critical questions remain about the period, its social structure and economic organization, and the long-term implications of its artistic achievements. On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Journal of Egyptian History , The University of British Columbia, Harvard University, and Brill Academic Publishers, Boston, held a conference at Harvard University on April 26, 2012. A distinguished group of Egyptological scholars from around the world gathered to consider new perspectives on the Pyramid Age; the results are presented here.

"This monograph is an in-depth study on the administrative title 'district overseer' (imy-r w) and the term 'district' or 'rural district' (w) in the Egyptian Middle Kingdom (about 2050 to 1650 BC). The sources demonstrate that the territory 'w' was created for some particular administrative needs at the end of the First Intermediate Period. From the historical point of view the management of the 'w' fits the organisation of the society created in this period. The title is still attested in the later Middle Kingdom but lost it importance. Menches, Komogrammateus of Kerkeosiris : The Doings and Dealings of a Village Scribe in the Late Ptolemaic Period (120-110 B.C.) /

This is the first study of Menches, village scribe ( komogrammateus ) of Kerkeosiris between 120 and 110 B.C., on the basis of the complete body of documents from his archive. The author first presents and discusses the only source material: the papyri found inside crocodile mummies at the Egyptian village Tebtunis during the winter of 1899/1900. After establishing the precise nature of these papyrus documents, the book goes on to explore what we can learn from them about Menches' (re)appointments to the post of village scribe; his position in the Ptolemaic bureaucracy; his contacts - written and otherwise - with peers and superiors; his day-to-day tasks, mainly concerned with fiscal land administration; and, in a final chapter, his dealings with a 'strike' of colleague village scribes and a 'strike' of farmers at his village.
