Young people have to make their own way in the world; they have to give meaning to and find meaning in their lives. This is the field of religious education, which is provided by parents, religious leaders, or teachers of religion and worldviews. One of the most important challenges is to educate children in their own religion, emphasizing that religion's tolerant and peaceful side and to teach children about the beliefs of other traditions. An even more important challenge is to teach them to live together in peace and justice. This volume deals with religious education in Christianity and Islam in specific countries. Scholars in religious education need to know more about the ways in which Muslims and Christians perceive and practice their respective forms of religious education and explore methods that help young people develop their religious identity in accordance with their tradition-and also meet with comrades from other traditions, as the two young Gambian and Dutch women shown on the cover do. This volume explores the field of Christian and Islamic education. Muslim and Christian scholars from Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Indonesia, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands describe various aspects of religious education at school, at home, in the mosque and church, via the media and in peer groups. The papers were presented and discussed at an authors' conference at VU University Amsterdam, organized in close collaboration between the staff of its Centre of Islamic Theology and other scholars in religious education, and the Islamic Universities League in Cairo. In Butoh and Suzuki Performance in Australia: Bent Legs on Strange Grounds, 1982-2023 , Marshall considers how the originally Japanese forms of butoh dance and Suzuki's theatre reconfigure historical lineages to find ancient yet transcultural ancestors within Australia and beyond. Marshall argues that artists working in Australia with butoh and Suzuki techniques develop conflicted yet compelling diasporic, multicultural, spiritually and corporeally compelling interpretations of theatrical practice. The exhibition \'Meisterwerke muhammedanischer Kunst\' that took place in Munich in 1910 marked a turning point in the approach to Islamic Art. The show attempted to break free of Orientalism and exotic fantasies and, in doing so, set a new standard for the reception of Islamic art in Europe. Moreover, naming the Islamic artefacts masterpieces, it layed claim to bestow upon Islamic art "a place equal to that of other cultural periods". This book is the first comprehensive study on this path-breaking exhibition. It includes a wealth of unpublished material and numerous novel ideas on the subject and addresses the exhibition's historical context, organization, realization and display as well as its reception in the West and its later influence on the study of Islamic art.

The first week after arrival at Abu Simbel was occupied by the work of organization and the photogrammetric survey. The latter was undertaken by a team of three French scholars, assisted by Drs. Mahmoud Tolba and Hasan Mostafa of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Cairo. In charge was Professor Poiuilliers, Directeur de 1'Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, a pioneer in all the applications of aerial survey. He served as chief of aerial observation for the AEF in 1916-1918. The first to apply the principles of aerial mapping to the study of architecture, it was his survey which was the basis of the photogrammetric section of the Report on the Monuments of Nubia (unfortunately without the mention of his name). By combining surveying and stereo (3-D) photography, he has been able to make very accurate measurements of buildings in the least possible time. From the results of the work'at Abu Simbel a model of the temple and an architectural study are now being prepared in Paris.

Stone Canvas : towards a better integration of 'rock art' and 'graffiti' studies in Egypt and Sudan /

This book presents proceedings of the conference devoted to rock art and graffiti studies in Egypt and Sudan that took place in Cairo from 10th to 12th November, 2019. The thematic spectrum of the contributions is very wide in terms of both their geographical and their chronological range, encompassing figural and textual sources dating from the Late Palaeolithic through the Predynastic, Dynastic, and Graeco-Roman periods, up to Christian and Islamic times. Many of the papers combine evidence from various archaeological domains and also attempt to better integrate graffiti and rock art materials in search of a common ground for research. Thus, the volume provides a good overview of the current state of investigations in these two fields of study in Egypt and Nubia. A book co-published with the Polish Center of Mediterranean Archeology, University of Warsaw.

Food and drink in Egypt and Sudan : selected studies in archaeology, culture, and history /

The study of historic foodways is as multifaceted and varied as food itself. The changes we see in food habits and choices over history reveal evolving social and political climates and help us envision our ancestors' everyday lives and imagined afterlives. Food certainly played a role in funerary rites; it was offered to the dead, of course, but also shared at the grave among the living family members, symbolically bridging between this world and the next. Choosing the food was embedded in a series of traditions and norms; how it relates to what was actually eaten in associated settlements enables an understanding of its meaning. Feasts, whether for the dead or the living, were laden with political and social meaning. Fasting, although requiring abstention from certain foods, also involves the management--from sourcing and storing to cooking and eating--of the permitted foods, a key concern in contexts such as monasteries where fasting occurred. This collective work demonstrates the diversity of possible approaches to food. It presents the current state of research on the foodways of Egypt and Sudan and highlights the importance of further interdisciplinary collaboration for a "big picture" approach. It brings together 16 articles covering archaeology (in the broadest sense), theory, anthropology, language, ethnography, and architecture to illustrate food traditions and history in Egypt and Sudan from as early as the 4th millennium BC to the 20th century.
L'étude des modes alimentaires historiques est aussi multiple et variée que la nourriture elle-même. Les changements que nous observons dans les habitudes et les choix alimentaires au fil du temps révèlent l'évolution des climats sociaux et politiques et nous aident à imaginer la vie quotidienne et l'au-delà de nos ancêtres. La nourriture jouait certainement un rôle dans les rites funéraires ; elle était offerte aux défunts, bien sûr, mais aussi partagée dans ou à proximité de la sépulture entre les membres vivants de la famille, jetant symboliquement un pont entre le monde d'ici-bas et l'au-delà. Le choix des aliments s'inscrivait dans une série de traditions et de normes ; la comparaison de ceux offerts avec ceux ordinairement consommés permet de comprendre la signification qui leur était attribuée.
