أربعة وثلاثون عامًا مضت منذ أن صدرت الطبعة الفرنسية الأولى لهذا الكتاب. النجاح الكبير الذي حققه هذا العمل لنسيم حنين دفع المعهد العلمي الفرنسي للآثار الشرقية لإعادة طبعه طبعة ثالثة. وهنا يقدم المعهد طبعته الأولى باللغة العربية. دراسة ظلت بلا مثيل لنجع بصعيد مصر، بلغ تعداده ٣١٥ فردًا في أوائل سنة ١٩٧٠، كانت كاِكتشاف لريف وفلاحي الصعيد صاغته نظرة مثقف قاهري، «عمل كحِجّ إلى المنابع المصرية الأصيلة والوعي بها» (شارل ڤيال). المسكن، طرق الصيد، الزراعة، الحياة اليومية للأهالي، الملابس، العقائد الدينية، الثقافات الشعبية: نسيم حنين عايش مجتمعًا قرويًا من «المهد إلى اللحد»، اعتنى واهتم وراقب أهم التغيرات، كما في كتاب «وصف مصر» وكتاب «المصريون المحدّثون» لإدوار وليم لين، اللذين قورن بهما الكتاب عند صدوره. الكتاب صار مصدرًا وعلامة هامة في تاريخ ريف مصر الحديث. احتوت الطبعة الثالثة على حوار طويل مع المؤلف ودراسته ومنهجه في تناول المواضيع والظروف التي عايشها بالنجع. عثر المؤلف على فيلم تسجيلي قصير عن النجع أخرجه الأب اليسوعي بول وارن، يمكن مشاهدته على قناة اليوتيوب الخاصة بالمعهد العلمي الفرنسي للآثار الشرقية. وأضيفَ نصٌ بقلم المخرج يفسر فيه تناوله الإثنوغرافي للفيلم وسينما الحقيقة

Mary Magdalene, Iconographic Studies from the Middle Ages to the Baroque examines the iconographic inventions in Magdalene imagery and the contextual factors that shaped her representation in visual art from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Unique to other saints in the medieval lexicon, images of Mary Magdalene were altered over time to satisfy the changing needs of her patrons as well as her audience. By shedding light on the relationship between the Magdalene and her patrons, both corporate and private, as well as the religious institutions and regions where her imagery is found, this anthology reveals the flexibility of the Magdalene's character in art and, in essence, the reinvention of her iconography from one generation to the next.

From Sasanian Mandaeans to Ṣābians of the marshes /

This historical study argues that the Mandaean religion originated under Sasanid rule in the fifth century, not earlier as has been widely accepted. It analyzes primary sources in Syriac, Mandaic, and Arabic to clarify the early history of Mandaeism. This religion, along with several other, shorter-lived new faiths, such as Kentaeism, began in a period of state-sponsored persecution of Babylonian paganism. The Mandaeans would survive to become one of many groups known as Ṣābians by their Muslim neighbors. Rather than seeking to elucidate the history of Mandaeism in terms of other religions to which it can be related, this study approaches the religion through the history of its social contexts.

This volume assesses marsh-forts as a separate phenomenon within Iron Age society through an understanding of their landscape context and palaeoenvironmental development. Protagoras beansprucht, die Jugend erziehen zu können. Warum nicht? Wenn «Mensch Maß aller Dinge» ist, kann jeder jeden 'besser' machen... Für Plato geht das nicht auf. Insofern Pädagogik Menschen dazu bringen will, 'bessere' Wesen zu werden, verlangt sie nach Plato ein gesundes Verständnis von 'Sein' überhaupt. Diese Studie untersucht die ontologischen Implikationen des Homo mensura -Satzes, Protagoras' Prämisse, im 'Theaitetos' - einem Dialog, der selten ontologisch gelesen wird. Wenn der protagoräische Prämisse den pädagogischen Anspruch nicht trägt, dürfte der 'Protagoras' gar nicht eigentlich von den erzieherischen Fragen handeln, die diskutiert werden. Es könnte sich herausstellen, dass er einen 'verborgenen' Diskurs enthält... Protagoras claims to be able to educate the young. If «Man is Measure of Everything», anybody can make everybody 'better'... To Plato, this doesn't add up. Insofar as pedagogy aims at making humans become better beings, to Plato it supposes a sound conception of 'being' per se. This study explores the ontological implications of homo mensura , Protagoras' premiss, in the 'Theaetetus' - a dialogue which is rarely read ontologically. If the Protagorean premiss doesn't support the pedagogical claim, the 'Protagoras' might not even be about the educational questions under discussion, but turn out to contain a 'hidden' discourse....

It is largely thanks to Zvi Yavetz that the Roman plebs has become "Salonfähig". In numerous important studies Yavetz has focused his - and our - attention on the problem of the relationship between the ruler and the masses of the ruled. Thus, it seemed natural to choose various aspects of this relationship as the topic of a volume in his honour. The articles here contributed by thirteen eminent friends and colleagues deal with historical and theoretical questions of the relationship between "the one" and "the many", covering a period from the second century B.C., through the times of the Late Republic and the Principate, to Late Antiquity and, finally, to an intriguing view at modern totalitarianism as perceived from an Enlightenment perspective.
