Political poetry across the centuries /
:
The volume dedicates itself to the rather neglected field of political poetry and offers a broad perspective across the centuries from Plato until the post-war period. The first part describes the social function of poetry in Plato, his reception in Heidegger and in Ezra Pound's poetry. A contribution on Milton complements this with a great poet`s reflection on central political questions. The second part, pre 20th century, is rounded off by two rulers from the edges of Europe or Asia who left their mark both on history and on the literary history of their country: the Georgian king Teimuraz I and the Persian ruler Shah Ismail. This theme is continued in the last contribution dedicated to an outstanding combination of political and poetic talent from recent history, Mao Zedong. Two other contributions refer to the epoch of WWI, Europe`s big cultural caesura, and they dedicate themselves to two eminently influential figures, Stefan George and Vladimir Mayakowsky.

Reading the Bible across contexts : Luke's gospel, socio-economic marginality, and Latin American biblical hermeneutics /
:
In Reading the Bible Across Contexts Esa Autero offers a fresh perspective on Luke's poverty texts. In addition to an historical reading, he conducted an empirical investigation of two Latin American Bible reading groups - one poor and the other affluent - to shed light on Luke's poverty texts. The interaction between historical reading and present-day readings demonstrates the impact of socio-economic status on biblical hermeneutics and sheds new light on Luke's views on wealth and poverty. At the same time Esa Autero critically examines liberation theologian's claim that poor are privileged biblical interpreters.

Gender across Media Landscapes /
:
The end of the first quarter of the 21st century invites us to revisit what gender means in society and how it has shaped our literal and cultural landscapes. This volume seeks to explore these spaces from interdisciplinary perspectives. The contributions span both "highbrow" art and popular culture, mapping interactions between gender and landscape as represented through numerous media. From urban to wild landscapes, distant planets, but also discursive practices, gendered domesticity, and the landscape of the body, the reader is invited to reflect on gender as a ubiquitous cultural marker. While contributing to the growing body of work on gender, media, and landscape, the volume lays out a new groundwork for developments in interdisciplinary studies on gender and its possible futures.

Muslim-Christian polemics across the Mediterranean : the splendid replies of Shihab al-Din al-Qarafi (d. 684/1285) /
:
In Muslim-Christian Polemics across the Mediterranean Diego R. Sarrió Cucarella provides an exposition and analysis of Shihāb al-Dīn al-Qarāfī's (d. 684/1285) Splendid Replies to Insolent Questions (al-Ajwiba al-fākhira 'an al-as'ila al-fājira). Written in response to an apology for Christianity by the Melkite Bishop of Sidon, Paul of Antioch, the Splendid Replies is among the most extensive and most important medieval Muslim refutations of Christianity, and the primary significance of this study is to provide detailed access to its argumentation and intellectual context for the first time in a western language. Moreover, the Introduction and Conclusion creatively situate the work within the challenges of modern-day Christian-Muslim dialogue.
