The Vase Bally Captives on a Late Predynastic Decorated Stone Vessel: a Study of the 'Bound Prisoner' and Related Motifs in Early Egypt

The Vase Bally, named after its first owner, Swiss businessman Eduard Bally (1847-1926) who acquired it in Luxor in 1904, is one of the most exquisite late Predynastic decorated stone vessels ever discovered in Egypt. First published and discussed by Egyptologist Henri Wild in 1948, the vessel, made of dark-green serpentine and measuring 18.6 cm in height, and its exceptional figural decoration, showing three bound captives in raised relief, deserve a new in-depth study in the light of current research on Predynastic and Early Dynastic art and iconography. This lavishly illustrated book offers a detailed study of this unique object and its decoration, as well as discussions of its possible ritual use, meaning, and sociocultural significance. Moreover, it places its iconography within the early development of the ‘bound prisoner’ and related motifs of interpersonal violence at a time that was crucial for state formation in Egypt. Without doubt, the visual expression of domination and violence against real or potential opponents was a fundamental aspect of the self-image and representation of the ruling elite in those times. Exhaustive catalogues of related objects and representations, including some lesser known or even hitherto unpublished artefacts, as well as famous objects of ‘art’ such as the Narmer Macehead and Palette, are an integral part of the study.
Reconsidering the Bound Captive Statuettes from the Pyramid Complex of Raneferef /

Previous scholars have hypothesized that a group of nine wooden statuettes of bound foreign captives from the funerary temple of Raneferef had originally been part of an article of furniture, most likely a royal throne. This article reassesses these arguments. Visual analysis suggests that four different artists, who were working within two distinct groups or “workshops,” carved the statuettes. As a result, it seems most likely that the statuettes were actually part of two different objects. Moreover, comparison with preserved chairs and thrones, as well as ancient images of them, demonstrates that the Raneferef captives do not readily fit this context. The Ottoman Mobilization of Manpower in the First World War offers a multi-faceted story of how the Ottoman Empire tried to cope with the challenges of permanent mobilization under total war conditions which reshaped state-society relations. By focusing mainly on Anatolia and the Muslim population, Mehmet Beşikçi argues that the conditions of mobilization pushed the Ottoman state to become more centralized, authoritarian and nationalist, but the increasing dependence on people paradoxically also enlarged their space of action vis-à-vis state authority. The book demonstrates that people's responses to the state's needs constituted a wide spectrum ranging from voluntary support to open resistance such as desertion. In turn, the state responded by revising its mobilization policies and reformulating new mechanisms of control at the local level.

The buried foundation of the Gilgamesh epic : the Akkadian Huwawa narrative /

The Akkadian Gilgamesh Epic, perhaps the most famous of Mesopotamian literature, has been considered the artistry of one author inspired by Sumerian tales. Specialists have assumed that all the earliest evidence (ca. 1800-1700 BCE) reflects this creative unity. Deep contrasts in characterization and narrative logic, however, distinguish the central adventure to defeat the monster Huwawa from what precedes and follows it. The Huwawa narrative stands on its own, so that the epic must have been composed from this prior Akkadian composition. Recognition of the tale embedded in the epic allows each block of material to be understood on its own terms. Epistemology and the social /
:
Epistemology had to come to terms with "the social" on two different occasions. The first was represented by the dispute about the epistemological status of the "social" sciences, and in this case the already well established epistemology of the natural sciences seemed to have the right to dictate the conditions for a discipline to be a science. But the social sciences could successfully vindicate the legitimacy of their specific criteria for scientificity. More recently, the impact of social factors on the construction of our knowledge (including scientific knowledge) has reversed, in a certain sense, the old position and promoted social inquiry to the role of a criterion for evaluating the purport of cognitive (including scientific) statements. But this has undermined the traditional characteristics of objectivity and rigor that seem constitutive of science. Moreover, in order to establish the real extent to which social conditionings have an impact on scientific knowledge one must credit sociology with a sound ground of reliability, and this is not possible without a preliminary "epistemological" assessment. These are some of the topics discussed in this book, both theoretically and with reference to concrete cases.

However, whereas in the case of treaty interpretation, this process has been codified in Articles 31-33 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, the interpretation of rules of customary international law has remained largely unexplored. This monograph demonstrates not only that rules of customary international law can be interpreted but also that they have continuously been interpreted by international and domestic courts. Through an examination of this case-law, the various methods of interpretation of customary rules and their limits are identified as well as the similarities and differences with the rules of treaty interpretation.
