: Updates on excavation, conservation, and research projects developing across Egypt Dr. Louise Bertini Executive Director ARCE in action on our 75th year W elcome to the new issue of Scribe magazine! We hope you had a great summer and are now ready to hear the latest interesting news about ARCE?s ongoing work in Egypt and about our plans for the final months of our 75th anniversary. Over the last six months, ARCE staff, officers, members, and our partners have been organizing and hosting events, developing our library and online resources, and working with excavators, academics, conservation experts, officials, and heritage management teams from Egypt and around the world. In May, we hosted our 74th Annual Meeting in the Minneapolis Marriot City Center hotel and conference venue, followed the weekend after by the virtual online conference. Both events were very successful. In addition to a slate of outstanding presentations, attendees were treated to special panel sessions and an exclusive museum workshop entitled ?Engaging Egypt and Africa in Museum Settings?. The keynote address was a joint presentation by Dr. Betsy Bryan and Dr. Fayza Haikal, who recounted deeply personal stories in their talk entitled ?Women in Egyptology: Long Career Reflections?. This was delivered at the magnificent Minneapolis Institute of Art and surely left a lasting impression on all who were in attendance. Next year, the 75th annual in-person meeting will take place in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, from April 19th to 21st at the Omni William Penn hotel. In Egypt, ARCE hosted the Cultural Property Protection conference with delegates attending from Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Yemen, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, and Palestine. This was made possible thanks to generous funding from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MoTA), the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC), and the US Department of State. The conference focused on ?Sustainable Documentation and Inventories Management? and ended on a promising note where recommendations were drafted based on more than thirty presentations by regional experts. Rec- ommendations included the formation of an ?Arab World Heritage? network, increasing collaboration through regional joint projects, and the development of regional training initiatives.

: The Celebrations Continue! E veryone interested in ancient Egypt knows of the events being celebrated this year in Egypt and throughout the world of Egyptology. It is of course the centennial of Howard Carter?s amazing discovery of KV62, the tomb of Tutankhamun, and also the bicentennial of Jean-Fran?ois Champollion?s demonstration that ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs could once again be read and understood. ARCE has thus continued rolling out its suite of events, bringing the celebrations to fruition! Programs In April, ARCE held its 73rd Annual Meeting in Irvine, California where we celebrated these momentous events with our keynote speaker, the current and 8th Earl of Carnarvon, Lord George Herbert. To further mark the centennial, we kicked-off our national chapter lecture tour in June with Dr. Marc Gabolde, who shared the fascinating story of the fate of several missing artifacts ?diverted? away from Tutankhamun?s tomb. The Virtual Annual Meeting also connected researchers and members from around the world, to participate and share their own research findings. Both virtual and in-person lectures were recorded and are all now online, helping more members experience the lectures at their own convenience. A sincere thank you to all the ARCE staff and members who helped make both the virtual and in-person Annual Meeting such a well-organized and successful event. We also have a number of exciting events coming up including the continuation of the Tutankhamun Centennial Chapter Lecture Tour with Dr. Betsy Bryan, who will be travelling to Chicago, Kansas City, North Texas, and Atlanta chapters between September 26th and October 3rd. The special event Transcending Eternity: The Centennial Tutankhamun Conference carried out in partnership with the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities will take place in Luxor from November 4th-6th, 2022, and we are honored to continue our partnership with National Geographic through our collaboration with their Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience project in providing content and partnership programming. See their advertisement in this issue for a discount code to visit the exhibition and stay tuned to ARCE.org for more information! Fieldwork In Luxor, the renovations of Howard Carter?s house continue thanks to the generous donation by long-time ARCE board member Adina Savin. In this issue of Scribe, ARCE?s Sally El Sabbahy and Nicholas Warner review the fascinating history behind the construction of Carter?s house and its use in the years following the discovery of KV62. In the next issue coming out in early 2023, the team will review the outcome of the conservation efforts and report on the grand re-opening of the house scheduled for November of this year, on the actual centennial of Carter opening the tomb on the 4th of November, 1922. Media Tour In June, ARCE hosted a special media tour to highlight ARCE Antiquities Endowment Fund (AEF) projects, Research Supporting Member projects, and past USAID-funded projects in Cairo. The tour included a visit to the Great Pyramid to see the results of the Ancient Egypt Research Associate?s (AERA) AEF-funded project to record and better-protect Khufu?s Mortuary Temple. The most visible change is the installation of a new access walkway encircling the remains of the temple?s formidable black basalt pavement, which should provide a more secure and less damaging path from which to see the surviving monumental remains. The tour also visited the Fatimid-era Bab Zuwayla gate, one of three surviving entrances that controlled access to the fortified medieval city of Old Cairo, where from 1998-2003, ARCE spearheaded an intense conservation project, with support from USAID and under the supervision of Nairy Hampikian, to remove, restore, and re-install the Bab Zuwayla?s sizable wood and iron doors. The final site visited was the Church of the blessed Virgin Mary, Saint George, and Abu Sefein to see some of the many Coptic icons that that were restored thanks to conservation efforts led by ARCE between 1998-2004. It is so important to revisit these successful projects in conjunction with the media and our colleagues from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. They show just how great an impact the USAID grants, member donations, and endowments funds have ?in the field?.

Domitianè - Kaiè Latomia (Umm Balad) : Le praesidium et les carrières /

: The excavations carried out at Domitianè/Kainè Latomia (Umm Balad) in 2001‑2003 by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs/IFAO have added to our knowledge of the occupation of the Eastern Desert of Egypt in Roman times. This site, located in the Porphyrites massif, has a rock deposit of "granito verde fiorito di bigio" (gray flowered green granite). The attempt to exploit it led to the construction of a small fort by the army under Domitian. It served as a base for the quarry workers. The gate inscription, although very mutilated, indicates a date of construction around 88–92. This early phase does not seem to go beyond the beginning of Trajan’s reign. The praesidium was probably abandoned thereafter, until around 146, when it was reoccupied for only a short period of time, before being abandoned again. The examination of the two quarries provides a lot of information about the organization of the work, but what can be established about their respective histories remains speculative for the most part. The use of Kainè Latomia finally ended in failure, probably due to the poor quality of the stone. However, some blocks were sent to Rome where they were used first of all for the decoration of the Domus Flavia (Flavian Palace) on the Palatine. 4e de couverture .

Ancient Egypt transformed : the Middle Kingdom /

: The Middle Kingdom (ca. 2030-1700 B.C.), the second great era of ancient Egyptian culture, was a transformational period during which the artistic conventions, cultural principles, religious beliefs, and political systems formed during earlier dynasties were developed and reimagined. This comprehensive volume presents a detailed picture of the art and culture of the Middle Kingdom, arguably the least known of Egypt's three kingdoms yet a time of remarkable prosperity and unprecedented change. International specialists present new insights into how Middle Kingdom artists refined existing forms and iconography to make strikingly original architecture, statuary, tomb and temple relief decoration, and stele. Thematic sections explore art produced for different strata of Egyptian society, including the pharaoh, royal women, the elite, and the family, while other chapters provide insight into Egypt's expanding relations with foreign lands and the themes of Middle Kingdom literature. More than 250 objects from major collections around the world are sumptuously illustrated, many with new photography undertaken specifically for this catalogue.

Amheida V : the house of Serenos /

: "The House of Serenos: Part I: The Pottery (Amheida V) is a comprehensive catalog and analysis of the ceramic finds from the late antique house of a local notable and adjacent streets in Amheida. It is the fifth book in the Amheida series. Amheida is located in the western part of the Dakhla oasis, 3.5 km south of the medieval town of El-Qasr. Known in Hellenistic and Roman times as Trimithis, Amheida became a polis by 304 CE and was a major administrative center of the western part of the oasis for the whole of the fourth century. The home's owner was one Serenos, a member of the municipal elite and a Trimithis city councillor, as we know from documents found in the house. His house is particularly well preserved with respect to floor plan, relationship to the contemporary urban topography, and decoration, including domestic display spaces plastered and painted with subjects drawn from Greek mythology and scenes depicting the family that owned the house. The archaeology from the site also reveals the ways in which the urban space changed over time, as Serenos's house was built over and expanded into some previously public spaces. The house was probably abandoned around or soon after 370 CE. The pottery analyzed here both helps to refine the relationship of the archaeological layers belonging to the élite house and those below it, and to shed light on the domestic and economic life of the household and region, from cooking and dining to the management of a complex agricultural economy in which ceramics were the most common form of container for basic commodities. The book will primarily be of interest to specialists interested in ceramology, Roman Egypt, and the material culture, social history, and economy of late antiquity"--

Houses in Graeco-Roman Egypt : arenas for ritual activity /

: This book examines different forms of ritual activities performed in houses of Graeco-Roman Egypt. It draws on the rich archaeological record of rural housing and evidence from literature or papyrological references to both urban and rural housing. The introduction critically considers the literature relevant to the topic in order to identify the research gap. Chapter I attempts to reconstruct the structure of urban and rural houses in Graeco-Roman Egypt in the light of papyri and archaeology. This aims to establish the physical and spatial framework for the rituals considered in the following chapters. In line with this reconstruction of domestic properties is the reconstruction of the architectural layout and use of the domestic pylon in Chapter II. Chapter III deals with two rituals enacted before the front door of the house, namely the sacrifice of fish on the 9th of Thoth and the sacrifice of pigs on the 15th of Pachon. Chapter IV considers the ritual of the illumination of lamps for the goddess Athena-Neith within and around houses on the 13th of Epeiph. Chapter V highlights the use of the house as an arena for social types of rituals associated with dining, birthdays, the mallokouria, the epikrisis, and marriage. Chapter VI explores the religious sphere of houses, which is obvious from domestic shrines, wall paintings with religious themes, and figurines of Egyptian and Graeco-Roman deities uncovered from houses. The last chapter deals with mourning rituals, which the house occupants performed after the demise of their beloved animals, such as dogs, and their family members. In the conclusion, I summarize my work and draw out its implications, suggesting that the house was the locus of social, religious, and funerary rituals in Graeco-Roman Egypt.

Samut nord : l'exploitation de I'or du désert oriental à l'époque ptolémaique : avec deux chapitres sur les occupations pharaonique et médiévale du district minier /

: "Located in the Eastern desert of Egypt, Samut North is a site entirely devoted to gold mining. Consisting of areas for the extraction and transformation of gold quartz and two vast buildings dedicated to housing, it was briefly occupied around 310 BC. Before they were destroyed in 2017, the remains of Samut North were exceptionally well preserved and their exploration represented a unique opportunity to fully study a mining facility at the height of gold mining in Egypt. It was also a chance to compare the evidence of the archaeological remains with the descriptions of the ancient mines left by Agatharchides of Cnidus, who lived in the 2nd century BC. The comparison of the data makes it possible to draw up an unprecedented panorama of the operating chain that produced part of the gold that Ptolemy, son of Lagos, needed to conduct his policy in the Mediterranean. The careful study of all the remains, including the most modest ones, also makes it possible to reconstruct the living conditions of the inhabitants (soldiers, logisticians, miners, including perhaps women) who, for some seasons, lived in the middle of the desert to exploit its riches. ... Added to these chapters is a study of three mining villages in Samut district dating back to the New Kingdom and the Middle Ages."--Back cover.

Guide to Deir el-Medina : village of artists /

: The site of Deir el-Medina is unique in its particularly well-preserved archaeological remains, which represent an exceptional ensemble in Egypt (consisting of a village, a necropolis and a temple), and in the rich documentation that it has delivered across the millennia. The inhabitants of Deir el-Medina--artists as well as craftsmen--dug and decorated the hypogea of the sovereigns in the Valley of the Kings and Queens. They did not restrict the use of their talents to benefit only the sovereigns, but decorated, or had decorated by the most skilled amongst them, their own tombs and were buried with hundreds of cult objects and grave goods. The scribes kept archives, which constitute an incredible wealth of information for the history of the New Kingdom and the functioning of the royal sites. They also had literary interests, and some of them established libraries, which are considered among the richest of those that have survived. Walking around the site of Deir el-Medina and studying the paintings that adorn the walls of the rock tombs, the visitor will get to know the spirit of its occupants, their earthly ambitions, the religious and funerary universe of their conception of the afterlife and also the feasts of the multiple deities who composed the local pantheon. Coming upon the temple, built in the Ptolemaic period, comes as a perfect ending to this archaeological walk

Elephantine in context : studies on the history, religion and literature of the Judeans in Persian period Egypt /

: "The Persian period has long been considered a "dark era" in Israel's history. For this reason, research has mainly focused on how it is depicted in the Hebrew Bible. A spectacular discovery of archaeological relics and epigraphic sources was hence hardly noticed: the military colony located on the island of Elephantine in the Nile, on the border between Egypt and present-day Sudan. The basic approach of this volume, which documents a three-year Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft project, is to break with a research tradition focusing on the Judeans (Jews) mentioned in the Aramaic papyri from Elephantine and instead investigate the military colony in a broader historical context also documented by Demotic and Egyptian-hieratic evidence found at Elephantine. The studies presented focus on three main subject areas: society and administration, religion, and literature. They show that historically the island of Elephantine hosted a multicultural society with several interactions between the Egyptians and the other inhabitants, and that it was also an important administrative centre for the Persian authorities."
