Text-critical and Hermeneutical Studies in the Septuagint is the title of a bilateral research project conducted from 2009 to 2011 by scholars from the universities of Munich (Germany) and Stellenbosch (South Africa). The joint research enterprise was rounded off by a conference that took place from 31st of August - 2nd of September 2011 in Stellenbosch. It was held in cooperation with the Association for the Study of the Septuagint in South Africa (LXXSA). Scholars from Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, France, Canada and the USA, as well as South Africa, delivered papers focusing on the history of the LXX; translation technique and text history; textual criticism, and the reception of the Septuagint.

The Animal Names of the Arab Ancestors : Explaining the Non-human Names of Arab Kinship Groups, Volume 2-1 Appendices /

In the Arab world, people belong to kinship groups (lineages and tribes). Many lineages are named after animals, birds, and plants. Why? This survey evaluates five old explanations - "totemism," "emulation of predatory animals," "ancestor eponymy," "nicknaming," and "Bedouin proximity to nature." It suggests a new hypothesis: Bedouin tribes use animal names to obscure their internal cleavages. Such tribes wax and wane as they attract and lose allies and clients; they include "attached" elements as well as actual kin. To prevent outsiders from spotting "attached" groups, Bedouin tribes scatter non-human names across their segments, making it difficult to link any segment with a human ancestor. Young's argument contributes to theories of tribal organization, Arab identity, onomastics, and Near Eastern kinship.

Work and Smell : Literature in Comparison /

Literature responds and contributes to the ways in which societies imagine their condition in general and economic life in particular. However, the weighty contribution made by smell motifs to the literary evaluation of working lives has remained underexplored. Work-related smells play an important role in contexts of social inclusion and exclusion, and they can impact strongly on the scope and limits for the fulfillment of needs at work and its surroundings. As emotionally powerful devices, olfactory motifs are also used imaginatively to counter culturally habitualised views on work. The book explores four issues which underpin the nexus of smell and work in literature: the social othering of smelly workers, a sense of social belonging mediated by smell, negative health effects of smelly work environments, and work-related smell in ambivalent contexts of sensual indulgence. The chapters cover European, American and Asian texts and also open up new perspectives for comparative studies.

In five chapters this volume 1) offers new evidence for the form, date, and meaning of an Archaic rupestral horos of Zeus on the Hill of the Nymphs in Athens, 2) reports and interprets for the first time many rock cuttings as remnants of the shrine of Zeus implied by the horos inscription, 3) argues from scattered artifacts of Zeus found in central and western Athens and from comparative archaeological evidence that this shrine was devoted primarily to the popular cult of Zeus Meilichios, 4) presents evidence and arguments that other deities, including Herakles Alexikakos, were worshipped at this shrine, and 5) summarizes the chronology of this cult and shrine in their historical and topographical contexts. An Appendix assembles all the testimonia to Zeus Meilichios in Attica.

Approaches to legal pluralism vary widely across the spectrum of different disciplines. They comprise normative and descriptive perspectives, focus both on legal pluralist realities as well as public debates, and address legal pluralism in a range of different societies with varying political, institutional and historical conditions. Emphasising an empirical research to contemporary legal pluralist settings in Muslim contexts, the present collected volume contributes to a deepened understanding of legal pluralist issues and realities through comparative examination. An unanswered question on the making of Pedagogy of the Oppressed is when, where and how this book was written, edited, and published. The Preface of the original Portuguese handwritten manuscript is dated in Chile by 1967. Some scholars imply that the manuscript was finished sometime in March or April 1969. By then, Freire had left Chile and three of his books had been published by the Institute of Research and Training in Agrarian Reform, ICIRA. Freire himself had already committed the English translation, from the original Portuguese manuscript with Herder & Herder in New York, together with the Spanish translation published by Tierra Nueva in Uruguay. This book explores the ways in which Freire's time and work in Chile proved to be decisive in the making of Pedagogy of the Oppressed , widely considered one of the most important books on critical pedagogy and adult learning and education in the twentieth century. The scope is confined to Paulo Freire's years of political exile in Chile, from late November 1964 to mid-April 1969. It builds upon evidence provided by scholarly research to answer four questions. What did Paulo Freire do during his years of exile in Chile. In which institutional contexts did he develop his pedagogical methods and political ideas? How was his literacy training method and participatory research approach shared throughout Latin America and the rest of the world?
