The volume contains the contributions presented during the 10th International Colloquium on Gregory of Nyssa, Contra Eunomium II , held in Olomouc, the Czech Republic, on September 15-18, 2004. Aphrodite's famous ribbon known as the cestus , the irresistible love charm that she loaned to Hera in the Iliad, was, thanks to a fruitful early misreading, transformed by ancient, medieval, and Renaissance authors into a symbol of honorable feminine chastity: in Maurice Scève's 1560 Microcosme , an epic rewriting of Genesis, Eve first appears before an astonished Adam wearing the virginal cestus as a symbolic guarantee of her sexual innocence. This book traces the history of this curious development from Homer to the end of the sixteenth century in France. Through analyses of both famous and little-known texts, it illustrates the complexity and fecund liberty of Homeric reception.

Jellicoe, for the literature on the Septuagint published between 1970 and 1993. It includes general publications on the Greek text - editions, language, translators' techniques, textual criticism, Septuagint manuscripts from Qumran and the use of the Septuagint in Ancient Judaism (Philon, Josephus) and Christianity (New Testament and Patristica). Particular studies are then classified by the individual books of the Bible, followed by literature on Oriental and Latin versions derived from the Septuagint. The studies on the illustrations of the Septuagint are included at the end. This reference tool will be indispensable for scholars or students interested in Bible, Judaism and Christianity in Late Antiquity.

In 30 BCE, Egypt became a province of the Roman empire. Alongside unbroken traditions-especially of the indigenous Egyptian population, but also among the Greek elite-major changes and slow processes of transformation can be observed. The multi-ethnical population was situated between new patterns of rule and traditional lifeways. This tension between change and permanence was investigated during the conference. The last decades have seen an increase in the interest in Roman Egypt with new research from different disciplines-Egyptology, Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Epigraphy, and Papyrology-providing new insights into the written and archaeological sources, especially into settlement archaeology. Well-known scholars analysed the Egyptian temples, the structure and development of the administration beside archaeological, papyrological, art-historical and cult related questions.

This volume contains editions of sixty-five Greek, Demotic, Coptic and Arabic texts from Egypt, contributed as a token of friendship and respect by forty-six of Klaas Worp's colleagues and co-authors upon his retirement from the Papyrological Institute of the University of Leiden in August 2008. The contents are as diverse as Klaas Worp's own wide range of interests, and provide a vivid impression of life and culture in Graeco-Roman Egypt. The texts are written on papyrus, potsherds, parchment, paper and wood. They include both literary and documentary papyri and ostraca, and date from the third century BC to the eleventh century AD. They are published fully, most for the first time, with transcriptions and translations, and are accompanied by photographs.
