: The recurring problems of eye-disease in Egypt account for the importance that ophthalmology has always had in this country. Eye-diseases and their treatment in Greco-Roman Egypt are documented by a remarkable but insufficiently known body of material: Greek literary papyri, which are often the only witnesses to lost medical works and which provide evidence of original theories, practices and terminology. The first part of this book provides an introduction to ancient ophthalmology, to the medical literature of Greco-Roman Egypt and to Greek medical papyri. The second part presents a critical edition (with a French translation and commentary) of the papyri with theoretical expositions, and a chapter on ophthalmic recipes.

The Historical Landscape of Ancient Kalabría : Balkan and Aegean Linguistic Influences /

: This book focuses on Kalabría as an ancient land of Italy from its origin to the early Middle Ages. The place name referred to the Salento peninsula, also called Messapia, as part of present-day Puglia and later to the land of the Bruttii , now the region of Calabria. This work is the first to carefully evaluate linguistic and historical studies in a comprehensive and monographic form. Following an interdisciplinary approach, the systematic combination of Linguistics and Landscape History guides the research step by step. The sample represents a new significant methodological instance that merges Toponymy, History, Archaeology, Topography, and Philology. See Less

Brill's companion to the reception of Herodotus in antiquity and beyond /

: Brill's Companion to the Reception of Herodotus in Antiquity and Beyond offers new insights on the reception and cultural transmission of one of the most controversial and influential texts to have survived from Classical Antiquity. Herodotus' Histories has been adopted, adapted, imitated, contested, admired and criticized across diverse genres, historical periods, and geographical boundaries. This companion, edited by Jessica Priestley and Vasiliki Zali, examines the reception of Herodotus in a range of cultural contexts, from the fifth century BC to the twentieth century AD. The essays consider key topics such as Herodotus' place in the Western historiographical tradition, translation of and scholarly engagement with the Histories , and the use of the Histories as a model for describing and interpreting cultural and geographical material.

Sortilege and its Practitioners in Late Antiquity: My Lots are in Thy Hands.

: Sortilege-the making of decisions by casting lots-was widely practiced in the Mediterranean world during the period known as late antiquity, between the third and eighth centuries CE. In My Lots are in Thy Hands: Sortilege and its Practitioners in Late Antiquity , AnneMarie Luijendijk and William Klingshirn have collected fourteen essays that examine late antique lot divination, especially but not exclusively through texts preserved in Greek, Latin, Coptic, and Syriac. Employing the overlapping perspectives of religious studies, classics, anthropology, economics, and history, contributors study a variety of topics, including the hermeneutics and operations of divinatory texts, the importance of diviners and their instruments, and the place of faith and doubt in the search for hidden order in a seemingly random world.

Egyptianizing figurines from Delos : a study in Hellenistic religion /

: This book investigates Hellenistic popular religion through an interdisciplinary study of terracotta figurines of Egyptian deities, mostly from domestic contexts, from the trading port of Delos. A comparison of the figurines' iconography to parallels in Egyptian religious texts, temple reliefs, and ritual objects suggests that many figurines depict deities or rituals associated with Egyptian festivals. An analysis of the objects' clay fabrics and manufacturing techniques indicates that most were made on Delos. Additionally, archival research on unpublished notes from early excavations reveals new data on many figurines' archaeological contexts, illuminating their roles in both domestic and temple cults. The results offer a new perspective on Hellenistic reinterpretations of Egyptian religion, as well as the relationship between "popular" and "official" cults.

Individuals and materials in the Greco-Roman cults of Isis : agents, images, and practices /

: In Individuals and Materials in the Greco-Roman Cults of Isis Valentino Gasparini and Richard Veymiers present a collection of reflections on the individuals and groups which animated one of Antiquity's most dynamic, significant and popular religious phenomena: the reception of the cults of Isis and other Egyptian gods throughout the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. These communities, whose members seem to share the same religious identity, for a long time have been studied in a monolithic way through the prism of the Cumontian category of the "Oriental religions". The 26 contributions of this book, divided into three sections devoted to the "agents", their "images" and their "practices", shed new light on this religious movement that appears much more heterogeneous and colorful than previously recognized.

: This collective volume is devoted to the Phoenician and the Punic civilization studied for its own purpose but also for its relationship with contemporaneous cultures of the ancient Mediterranean. The first part discusses the various sources relating to the Phoenician and Punic world; a second part attempts to sum up the different facets of its material and cultural surrounding. The third part expounds the present state of our knowledge of the Phoenicians and the Punics in each of the large geographical areas where they have emerged. The work thus assembles clearly, conveniently and as completely as possible the basic facts that will allow specialists of fellow disciplines to initiate themselves, and well-informed researchers to complete or check easily their information. This volume includes a bibliography, illustrations, maps and indexes.

Emperors and historiography : collected essays on the literature of the Roman Empire by Daniël den Hengst /

: In this collection of essays Roman historical and biographical texts are studied from a literary point of view. The main interest of the author, Daniël den Hengst, professor emeritus of Latin at the University of Amsterdam, concerns the development of Roman historiography, the ways in which Roman historians present their work and the intertextual relations between these works and other literary genres. Special attention is given to the Historia Augusta and Ammianus Marcellinus, but also authors from the classical period, such as Cicero, Livy and Suetonius and their ideas about historiography are discussed. The articles demonstrate that a detailed interpretation of these texts in the original language is indispensable to understanding the aims and methods of ancient historians and biographers.

: This volume publishes the content of 133 charters of Saint Louis, issued in the East during his first crusade. They come from the Latin manuscript 9778 of the National Library of France, which went overseas with the monarch. These documents from 1248 to 1254 shed light on the operation of the royal household in the Levant. In particular, they highlight two prosperous periods in 1250 and 1252, which saw the king granting a series of privileges from Acre and Caesarea of Palestine, and allow us to follow the early careers of new men coming from the Holy Land and France.

On the elucidation of some symptoms and the response to them : (formerly known as On the causes of symptoms) /

: The present consilium, commonly known as De causis accidentium, after the Latin translation by John de Capua, was, like the earlier consilium On the Regimen of Health, composed by Maimonides at the request of al-Malik al-Afḍal Nūr al-Dīn Alī, Saladin's eldest son. As a result of not adopting the lifestyle and dietary recommendations in On the Regimen of Health, al-Afḍal may have continued to suffer from a number of afflictions, amongst them hemorrhoids, depression, constipation, and, possibly, a heart condition. The consilium was written after 1200, the year in which al-Afḍal was deposed and banished from Egypt permanently, but probably not long before 1204, the year in which Maimonides died.

The Turba Philosophorum is a treatise whose Arabic original is lost, and which is one of the founding texts of Latin alchemy. But its interest goes far beyond the history of alchemy: using sources as different as Zosimus of Panopolis, Stephanos of Alexandria or, more surprising, Hippolyte of Rome, the Turba is at the confluence of many Greek traditions (philosophical, hermetic and patristic), and bears testimony both to the history of the transmission of Greek knowledge, and of its reception in Egypt in the ninth century. The study of the structure of the treatise also shows the exceptional originality of the philosophical project of its author: to construct a path allowing the reader to appropriate the doctrine of Greek \'philosophers\'.

The Worldwide Depression, 1929-1939 /

: The Great Depression affected the whole world, but most studies of this crucial phenomenon have only dealt with the industrialized countries and have neglected the peasants of Asia, Africa and Latin America. The present study adopts a global point of view and covers the fate of the peasantry at the periphery of the world market in addition to that of the nations of Europe and North America. It also deals with the political consequences of the economic decline and its aftermath. The tragedy of the international gold standard, the problems of agricultural production and the recoil of global credit are discussed in detail. The experiences of all major countries have been outlined in specific chapters. Recent research work has been summarized and the blind spots of earlier economic analyses have been highlighted. A comprehensive annotated bibliography is added to the text. This volume is invaluable for the scholar of Modern Economic History.
