Logic and Aristotle's Rhetoric and Poetics in Medieval Arabic Philosophy /

This book examines a widespread, and often misunderstood, doctrine within the medieval Aristotelian tradition, namely the inclusion of Aristotle's Rhetoric and Poetics within the scope of the Organon. It studies this doctrine, as presented by the Islamic philosophers Al- Fārābī, Avicenna, and Averroes, from a purely philosophical perspective, and argues that the logical construal of the arts of rhetoric and poetics is both interesting and illuminating. The book begins by examining some prevalent misconceptions regarding the logical interpretation of the Rhetoric and Poetics. Chapter two considers the Greek background of the doctrine, first through an examination of the Aristotelian divisions of the sciences, and then through an examination of the beginnings of the logical classification of the Rhetoric and Poetics among the Greek commentators from the school of Alexandria. The remainder of the work is devoted to a detailed consideration of the Arabic philosophers' development of the doctrine, both their understanding of its general epistemological and logical underpinnings, and their elaboration of the specific logical structures upon which poetical and rhetorical discourse is based. Consideration is also given to the relationship between contemporary philosophical views of rhetoric and poetics, and the views of these medieval authors.

In a meticulous commentary on the last three chapters of the Phenomenology of Spirit , which is carried out paragraph by paragraph, the logical structure of this work is analyzed. It is elaborated how this logical structure is made explicit in the (shorter) logic of the Enzyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften . This opens up access to two of Hegel's central works in a special way. First of all, it becomes clear in what way the Phenomenology of Spirit is a key to gaining access to the logic of the Enzyklopädie . But conversely, this logic also helps to gain a better understanding of the structure of the Phenomenology of Spirit . In einem akribischen Kommentar zu den letzten drei Kapiteln der Phänomenologie des Geistes , der Absatz für Absatz durchgeführt wird, wird der logische Aufbau dieser Arbeit analysiert. Es wird herausgearbeitet, wie diese logische Struktur in der (kleinen) Logik der Enzyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften explizit gemacht wird. Dies eröffnet in besonderer Weise den Zugang zu zwei zentralen Werken Hegels. The book brings into relief the variety of approaches and disciplines that have informed the quest for a theory of cognition. The center of interest are the historical, geographical, and theoretical peripheries of classic AI's mainstream research program. The twelve chapters bring back into focus the variety of strategies and theoretical questions that researchers explored while working toward a scientific theory of cognition and pre-cognition. The volume is organized in four parts, each one including three essays. The first one deals with cybernetics, the approach that may be considered as the most important periphery of classic AI research. The second part focuses on the geographical periphery of AI research. It examines how the theories and techniques developed on AI's home ground were translated into countries with different cultures and traditions: Italy, France, and the Soviet Union. The third part focuses on AI's periphery understood in the cultural and historical meaning of the term. It contains essays that locate some of the central concepts of AI, like representation and computability, within a broader philosophical (Descartes, Aristotle, Leibniz) and technical background (programming theory and practice).
