Encompassing both philological and archaeological evidence in the discussion, this book is the first comprehensive historical study of interdisciplinary scope dedicated to Kizzuwatna and the region of Cilicia in the second millennium BC. The book presents and re-analyses a diverse array of sources and data, providing an updated overview of various topics of interest beyond political history - including historical geography, culture and religion, population and language. Setting the scene : the deceased and regenerative cult within offering table imagery of the Egyptian Old to Middle Kingdoms, C.2686-C.1650 BC /

Ancient Egyptian offering table scenes have been explored from chronological and art historical perspectives over the past century of Egyptological research. This descriptive overview has usually centred on the diachronic evolution of philology and food offerings, focussing less frequently on offering table images as discrete elements of highly codified information. This study investigates gender-based and ritual-dependent afterlife expectations of the deceased over a key phase in Egyptian history from the latter part of the Old Kingdom to the end of the Middle Kingdom Period, c.2686 BC - c.1650 BC. Conclusions indicate that the transformational journey to the afterlife can be understood through a meaningful synthesis of people, produce and ritual embedded within offering table depictions.

The last unexcavated stone sanctuary from the Greco-Roman period, the Temple of Athribis near Sohag in Middle Egypt, remained partially buried until the beginning of this century. The focus of the Athribis (Atripe) conference in context, held from June 7th to 9th, 2022 in Tubingen, was the large number of research results already achieved from different disciplines as well as future research strands. The associated conference proceedings, edited by Marcus Muller and Carolina Teotino-Tattko, are dedicated to these results and cover a wide range of topics in 19 contributions based on archaeological, philological, technical and religious-historical approaches. The investigations deal with the excavated temple rooms, inscriptions and the recovered individual finds and place them in the regional and supra-regional context. Studies of architecture, art history and various groups of materials from the material remains provide a great variety of insights into the construction of the temple, its chronology and ultimately the everyday lives of the residents at the time. The sanctuary in Athribis is a veritable witness to its multi-faceted fate, which can be felt not only in its rooms, walls and ceilings, but also in the archaeological findings and findings.

The comfort of the mystics : a manual and anthology of early Sufism /

This critical Arabic text edition of Salwat al-ʿārifīn wa-uns al-mushtāqīn, a manual of early Sufism by Abū Khalaf al-Ṭabarī (d. circa 470/1077), is based on a very old manuscript preserved in Dār al-Kutub al-Miṣrīya of Cairo, Egypt and copied in 459/1067. It is introduced by a detailed analytical study of the author and his work. Salwat al-ʿārifīn forms an integral part of Sufi literature and reflects Islamic developments in Nishapur in northeastern Iran. This crucial Arabic text, published for the first time, is especially valuable because of its great philological accuracy and sound textual tradition. It represents an essential source for the intellectual history of Islam during the middle of the 4th/10th to the middle of the 5th/11th century.
