Some recently found Greek poems : text and commentary /

: This book deals with some (fragmentary) poems of Alcaeus, Archilochus, Hipponax and Stesichorus. The choice of the poems was determined by external factors: all of them are written on papyrus and were first published during the last few decades. After the first edition the fragments were discussed by many scholars, mainly in periodicals. The authors of this volume have assembled the results of this scholarly work and used it as a foundation for a carefully contituted text and an extensive overall commentary. In this way the poems will be more easily accessible than they were hitherto.

On the elucidation of some symptoms and the response to them : (formerly known as On the causes of symptoms) /

: The present consilium, commonly known as De causis accidentium, after the Latin translation by John de Capua, was, like the earlier consilium On the Regimen of Health, composed by Maimonides at the request of al-Malik al-Afḍal Nūr al-Dīn Alī, Saladin's eldest son. As a result of not adopting the lifestyle and dietary recommendations in On the Regimen of Health, al-Afḍal may have continued to suffer from a number of afflictions, amongst them hemorrhoids, depression, constipation, and, possibly, a heart condition. The consilium was written after 1200, the year in which al-Afḍal was deposed and banished from Egypt permanently, but probably not long before 1204, the year in which Maimonides died.

Some Year Dates of Horemheb in Context /

: This article reconsiders the content and context of a well-known, but heretofore poorly understood, text from Horemheb’s “Mansion of Millions of Years” by Medinet Habu. The hieratic ink inscription, dated to year twenty-seven of an unnamed king, has often been dismissed as a “graffito” of the Ramesside period. In fact, however, it may be a work notation related to the movement of statuary within the temple, in which case we should at least consider the possibility that it dates to the reign of Horemheb rather than to a later period. The article also discusses the wine jar dockets recovered during the re-clearance of KV 57 and their possible significance to the chronology of the reign.

Demotic Accounts: Some Notes on the Form and Content /

: This essay aims at shedding some light on Demotic accounts as a vital administrative tool in the ancient Egyptian’s everyday life in the Late and Greco-Roman Periods as evidenced by the large number of published accounts. Account documents belong to Demotic documentary texts and they usually record lists of various amounts of specific items that have been paid or received by certain individuals in different transactions. Such documents began to be recorded in Demotic from the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty. Among the abundant vocabulary of accounts in Demotic, ip  “account” and wn  “list” seem to be the only two words which were used to refer to accounts as a type of text. A full-structured account, which is not the case in most of Demotic accounts, normally contains a maximum number of three elements, that is, the heading, the main body, and the closing formula.

Some thoughts about the evolution of human behavior : a literature survey /

: On his death, Arthur Boucot (1924-2017) left an unfinished manuscript in which he surveyed the skeletal, behavioural, and cultural changes that have characterized Homo from its first recognition in the Late Pliocene to the present. The results, edited after his death, provide a heavily referenced sourcebook for future workers in diverse fields.
