This volume presents the 25 years correspondence of a Roman Catholic missionary, Fr. François Laydevant, who worked in Lesotho from 1905 to 1954, with a Roman Catholic missiologist, Fr. Albert Perbal, based in Rome, Italy. The exchange of letters was provoked by the missiologist who needed direct information from the mission field for his own research and teaching, and first of all in order to fulfil his role of consultant with the Institute for the Study of African Languages and Cultures in London and the Conference Romaine des Missions Catholiques d'Afrique in Rome. The main result of the correspondence, apart from fulfilling the above stated purpose, was to propel Fr. Laydevant into fruitful anthropological, ethnological and historical research into Lesotho and its people. The correspondence deals with many contemporary missiological problems of the time. It is also a primary source for the history of the Church in Lesotho, in particular the Roman Catholic Church. FRENCH TEXT Ce volume comprend la correspondance de vingt-cinq ans d'un missionnaire catholique, le Père François Laydevant, qui travailla au Lesotho de 1905 à 1954, avec un missiologue catholique, le Père Albert Perbal, qui demeurait à Rome. C'est le missiologue qui provoqua l'échange de lettres. Il avait besoin d'information directe à partir du champ missionnaire pour ses recherches et son enseignement et d'abord pour remplir son rôle auprès de l'Institut pour l'Étude des langues et des Cultures Africaines à Londres et auprès de la Conférence Romaine des Missions Catholiques d'Afrique à Rome. Le résultat le plus évident de cette correspondance fut de lancer le Père Laydevant dans les recherches ethnologiques, anthropologiques et historiques sur le Lesotho et son peuple. La correspondance aborde plusieurs questions missiologiques contemporaines au cours de ces 25 ans et demeure une source primaire pour l'histoire de l'Église au Lesotho, en particulier l'Église Catholique.

This book is about the articulation of ethics in the QurʾÄn and the tafsÄ«r tradition. Based on an examination of several apparently problematic QurʾÄnic narrative pericopes and how the exegetes grappled with them, the book demonstrates that the moral world of the QurʾÄn is polyvalent and non-linear, owing, above all, to its intrinsic ethical antinomies and textual ambiguities. That is, the book contends that paradox and uncertainty are both constituents of the QurʾÄn's ethical architectonics, and that through these constituents the QurʾÄn charts a system of ethics that seeks to tread in the midst of a non-ideal world rife with uncertainty. The book also argues that the tafsÄ«r tradition tends to erode the hermeneutical openness of the QurʾÄn and, thereby, limits the QurʾÄn's ethical potential. The book, thus, advances our understanding of QurʾÄnic ethics and contributes to the field of tafsÄ«r studies and to the scholarship on QurʾÄnic hermeneutics.

Die Untersuchung zeichnet die Entstehung des Levitismus nach. Dieser kommt erst in der spätvorexilischen Zeit als judäische Innovation des Stammeskonzeptes auf. Überlieferungen über den Jakobsohn Levi werden nach 722 in Juda zur Formung einer Gruppenidentität der Beamten und literalen Eliten genutzt. Mose und Aaron als Beamte des Gottes Israel werden Protagonisten dieser Gruppierung, weswegen man auch das Priestertum am Zentralheiligtum als Teil der Beamtenschaft integrierte, sodass u.a. im Deuteronomium von levitischen Priestern gesprochen wird. In der nachexilischen Zeit wurden eine Reihe von Berufen und Gruppen unter der Bezeichnung "Leviten" als eine Art Tempelbeamtentum der Priesterschaft unterstellt. Dabei wurde eine Professionalisierung des Kultbetriebes und eine radikale Trennung von kultischen und nichtkultischen Bereichen und Tätigkeiten vollzogen. Darin agierten die Leviten für das Volk und repräsentierten es in den nichtkultischen Bereichen des Tempels. The study tracks the origins of the Biblical Levitism. It only emerged in the late pre-exilic period as a Judean innovation of the tribal concept. After 722, traditions about Jacob's son Levi were used in Judah to form a group identity of officials and literal elites. Moses and Aaron, as officials of the God of Israel, became protagonists of this group. Therefore, the priests at the central shrine were also integrated as part of the officials, so that Deuteronomy, for example, speaks of Levitical priests. In the post-exilic period, a number of professions and groups were subordinated to the priesthood under the designation "Levites" as a kind of temple office. In the process, a professionalisation of the cultic sector and a radical separation of cultic and non-cultic areas and activities took place. In this, the Levites acted on behalf of the people and represented them in the non-cultic areas of the temple.

L'aventure extraordinaire d'Alexandre a fait de lui un héros hors du commun dont les échos ont rencontré des interprétations bienveillantes et enthousiastes aussi bien que des commentaires franchement négatifs. Pour les uns Alexandre était le roi modèle que les princes de ce monde feraient bien d'imiter: tout succès serait alors garanti. Pour les autres le comportement du jeune roi constituait un anti-exemple: son arrogance, son hybris étaient inacceptables, voire pernicieux. Chaque société réceptrice a ainsi récrit l'aventure dans la perspective qu'elle a jugée fonctionnelle. Le travail que voici présente pour la première fois l'évolution des réécritures consacrées à Alexandre le Grand dans la littérature française du 12e siècle depuis le texte d'Albéric (début du siècle) jusqu'au Vengement Alixandre de Gui de Cambrai (vers 1191). Entre ces deux textes-là on trouve l' Alexandre décasyllabique , le Fuerre de Gadres mis sur le compte d'un certain Eustache, l' Alexandre en Orient de Lambert le Tort, la Mort Alixandre , les versions conservées par les manuscrits Arsenal et Venise, le Roman de toute Chevalerie attribué à Thomas de Kent, la Venjance Alixandre de Jehan le Nevelon ainsi que le grand Roman d'Alexandre , terminé vers 1184/5, par Alexandre de Bernai dit de Paris, où Alexandre est vraiment le roi modèle. Ce dernier texte se distingue d'ailleurs non seulement des autres réécritures en territoire français de par sa solide charpente organisatrice (son compilateur l'a voulu example fonctionnel), mais aussi de par le fait qu'il est le seul à avoir occasionné de nombreuses suites et interpolations,- parmi lesquelles, entre autres, les fameux Vœux du Paon de Jacques de Longuy-on (1313/4). La compilation d'Alexandre de Bernai dit de Paris est devenue, et ce à juste titre, la vulgate de la tradition française. Tel est le cas pour les documents égyptiens ou égyptisants véhiculés par le commerce grec ou phénico-punique jusque vers les côtes lointaines de l'Ouest du bassin méditerranéen. La tradition de l'égyptophilie dans notre culture européenne a semblé également devoir prendre ici sa place. Pour chacune des 585 notices sont données les références bibliographiques très précises de la publication concernée, ainsi qu'une analyse détaillée du contenu de la publication et de son apport à nos thèmes de recherches. L'objectif des auteurs a été de fournir un instrument de travail le plus complet et le plus pratique possible. Le présent ouvrage tente la mise en oeuvre de l'analyse structurelle pour vingt psaumes, soit les Pss. 52, 54-60, 108, 62, 64-66, 78-80, 91-92, et le grand Ps. 119. Son ambition est de montrer à quel point l'architecture de ces textes en conditionne et en ouvre l'interprétation. Les considérer comme des ensembles structurés, faisant jouer entre les diverses unités des rapports multiples et ordonnés, est nécessaire à leur compréhension. A l'occasion on montre comment l'analyse structurelle permet de mieux saisir l'enchaînement des psaumes consécutifs dans le Psautier, ou encore les rapports entre psaumes opérant entre eux d'importants emprunts (57, 60, 108). Ici sera donc pris en compte en priorité le texte lui-même tel qu'il se présente à nous, afin de saisir ces clefs d'interprétation qui y sont inscrites. L'ouvrage devrait retenir l'attention non seulement des spécialistes des Psaumes, mais encore de quiconque entend les connaître de près. Les études qu'il contient ont été à cette fin basées sur une traduction littérale de chaque psaume, sans renoncer pour autant à recourir, chaque fois que cela s'est avéré nécessaire, au texte hébreu.
