Israel's restoration : a textual-comparative exploration of Ezekiel 36-39 /

Commentators traditionally use a textual-critical methodology in examining Hebrew and Greek manuscripts to establish an 'original' reading, frequently attributing other variants to scribal error. This book proposes a complementary-textual comparative methodology that treats each Hebrew and/or Greek manuscript with equal value, listening to each voice as a possible interpretive trajectory. This methodology is applied to the restoration of Israel in Ezekiel 36-39, initially on a micro level examining each verse for intra-linguistic and trans-linguistic variants, frequently finding exegetical reasons for variants. The macro application compares Papyrus 967 with extant manuscripts, finding the different chapter order and pericope minus (36:23c-38) due to theological reasons. This comparative methodology can be used with any study dealing with different manuscripts and versions.

Les acquis récents en histoire textuelle justifient de revenir sur certaines variantes du texte grec, qu'elles relèvent d'une Vorlage différente du texte massorétique ou des procédures textuelles imaginées face à un mot hébreu rare ou à une difficulté exégétique. Les traces d'interprétation obligent ainsi à interroger le milieu de production - culturel, politique ou religieux - de la Septante des Douze. Les lectures juives et chrétiennes du Dodékaprophéton, de Symmaque à l'expression iconographique byzantine, témoignent enfin de l'importance de l'histoire de la réception autant que du texte lui-même. The Greek translation of the Minor Prophets is interesting from several points of view. The literary character of the texts calls for a re-examination of the stylistic and poetic strategies employed by the translator. Recent developments in the study of textual history justify a fresh study of certain variants in the Greek that may arise either from a non-Masoretic Vorlage or from attempts to deal with rare Hebrew words or exegetical difficulties. Such signs of interpretative activity thus raise questions about the original context in which the Septuagint of the Twelve was produced. Finally, Jewish and Christian readings of the Dodekapropheton testify to the importance of the book's reception history as well as of the text itself.

This volume examines reflexes of a West Semitic myth describing an attempted coup against the high god of the pantheon. In 1939, J. Morgenstern theorized that this myth was the precursor of the Satan traditions found in Jewish and Christian sources. This treatment (1) reconsiders Morgenstern's hypothesis, (2) reviews scholarship on this myth of cosmic rebellion within the W.F. Albright/F.M. Cross, Jr. lineage, (3) compiles a concordance of texts cited by scholars in analyzing the myth, (4) considers the possibility that Athtar is the myth's divine antihero, (5) provides a translation and close reading of selected Ugaritic and Hebrew texts that have informed discussion about the myth, (6) reassesses the value of these texts, and (7) provides a reconstruction of the myth.

In The Translation and the Translator of the Peshitta of Hosea , Eric J. Tully offers the first study of the Peshitta conducted via insights and methods from the discipline of Translation Studies. Every translator leaves residue of his or her interference in the course of the translation process. This investigation analyzes that interference (seen in the form of translation shifts), categorizes it, and draws conclusions with implications for textual criticism, Translation Studies, historical reconstruction, and the history of interpretation. Eric Tully argues that the Peshitta was translated from a Hebrew text similar to the Masoretic Text (but not identical to it) and was also influenced by readings from the Greek Septuagint. The study concludes with a socio-historical profile of the translator. Just as an ancient person makes one kind of ceramic jug or bronze incense stand and not another, the translation is a literary artifact in which the translator has crafted a text that reflects his or her own values and technique.

This book is about the articulation of ethics in the QurʾÄn and the tafsÄ«r tradition. Based on an examination of several apparently problematic QurʾÄnic narrative pericopes and how the exegetes grappled with them, the book demonstrates that the moral world of the QurʾÄn is polyvalent and non-linear, owing, above all, to its intrinsic ethical antinomies and textual ambiguities. That is, the book contends that paradox and uncertainty are both constituents of the QurʾÄn's ethical architectonics, and that through these constituents the QurʾÄn charts a system of ethics that seeks to tread in the midst of a non-ideal world rife with uncertainty. The book also argues that the tafsÄ«r tradition tends to erode the hermeneutical openness of the QurʾÄn and, thereby, limits the QurʾÄn's ethical potential. The book, thus, advances our understanding of QurʾÄnic ethics and contributes to the field of tafsÄ«r studies and to the scholarship on QurʾÄnic hermeneutics.

Die vorgestellten Belegstücke stammen aus unterschiedlichen geographischen Kontexten: a. Städtedreieck Tabriz-Konya-Bagdad; b. persischer Kulturraum; c. Osmanisches Reich. Diese Rollen waren bei Angehörigen von Männerbünden (Sufi-Orden, Futuwwa - und Aḫī -Gruppierungen, Gilden) beliebt. Die Studie untersucht das auf diesen Dokumenten verwendete textliche und ge¬stalterische Vokabular. Neben Passagen aus dem Koran (auch vollständige Abschriften) lassen sich oft Gebete und weitere Texte frommen Inhalts feststellen. Devotion and Protection in Islam deals with hand-written documents in the scroll format dating from the 14th-19th centuries. These documents can be attributed to various geographic contexts: a. the triangle between the cities of Tabriz, Konya and Baghdad; b. the Persianate world; c. the Ottoman Empire. These scrolls were appreciated by members of different associations ( Männerbünde ; e.g. Sufi orders, Futuwwa and Aḫī groups). This study analyses the textual and ornamental vocabulary applied on the scrolls. The copied texts mostly comprise passages from the Quran and prayers. Certain features suggest that such scrolls were often produced in heterodox environments. Additionally, this study underscores the high art-historical value of these documents, particularly appreciated by members of the ruling elite.
