Toppling Things as Memorial Contestation : Spectacle and Affect of Monument Removal /
:
Following the murder of George Floyd in 2020, monuments became a focal point: protestors toppled or spray-painted them, even danced on them. These politically, visually, and emotionally potent events may have looked instantaneous, yet frequently sprang from years of activism, as well as protracted political and academic debate. Toppling Things challenges stereotypical notions monument topplings as riotous, spontaneous, or irrational. Bringing together the ideas and emotions, the uncertainty and convictions, of artists, activists, and academics, the volume rejects a neatly tied-up, distant narrative. As it sheds light on the global, personal, immediate, and historical processes around the fall of a monument, the volume engages directly with the complexity of toppling activism and monument removal as a form of lived experience.

Recht en rechtspraak in Nederlands-Indië /
:

Refusals and Reflections : Teaching and Learning Social Justice in Qualitative Research /
:
Though qualitative research methods shape scholarship around the globe, and institutions worldwide offer qualitative coursework, there is very little explicit discussion on how to effectively teach qualitative research. Instead, a standard approach is for instructors to gain in-depth expertise in qualitative methodologies, with little or no pedagogical training. The effect is a continuous and nearly exclusive emphasis on content knowledge that undermines the preparation of novice researchers as both teachers and learners. This book works to fill that gap by offering perspectives, strategies, and applications from instructor and student perspectives, based on a semester-long class emphasizing social justice in qualitative research. This edited volume offers sections on pedagogical strategies, students' responses to and applications of those concepts, and then instructor reflections. The goal is to offer an important starting point for explicit discussions on how qualitative research might be taught and learned, in addition to how it might be thoughtfully and ethically conducted. Contributors are: Erica T. Campbell, Sun Young Gu, Kelsey H. Guy, Aimee J. Hackney, April M. Jones, Alison N. Kearley, Caran Kennedy, Amon Neely-Cowan, Allyson Pitzel, Diana Quito, Erin E. Rich, Stephanie Anne Shelton, Ashley Salter Virgin and Venus Trevae Watson. See Less

Medieval Mount Athos between Wealth and Poverty /
:
These collected studies dedicated to the Orthodox monastic center of Mount Athos during the Middle Ages paint a compelling picture of the Holy Mountain's monastic communities as economic actors. Mount Athos' rich archival holdings allow both for the minute scrutiny of economic activity and the tracing of long-term trends. Not only were Hagiorite monasteries major players on a local level, but they were also embedded within trans-Mediterranean networks of patronage. The unique status of Mount Athos as a semi-autonomous monastic polity also influenced attitudes towards landholding as well as wealth and poverty more generally. Contributors are Tinatin Chronz, Zachary Chitwood, Stefan Eichert , Martina Filosa, Mihai-D. Grigore, Michel Kaplan, Vladimer Kekelia, Kirill A. Maksimovič, Zisis Melissakis, Nicholas Melvani, Vanessa R. de Obaldía, Daniel Oltean, Nina Richards, Kostis Smyrlis, Apolon Tabuashvili, and Alexander Watzinger. See Less
